I'm a CS major and I've built several computers and sold them for Orifice Max.. Dell is the best big-name other than building your own for desktops.. Compaq desktops blow but their laptops kick ass.. Micron makes really nice desktops (though they probably aren't one of the big names anymore) but they've always been over priced. Gateway used to be decent but has gone the way of crappy non-standard parts like Compaq and everyone else.. Sony uses non-standard parts but they are made well and good if you never intend to upgrade.. eMachines are held together with bits of wire and I wouldn't buy one at any price (though I've got a few that have been given to me that I use for Linux servers.. because the owners couldn't sell them because noone wants a second hand eMachine.. it's like redigested vomit crapped into a bucket instead of a Filet Mignon)

You could just buy a sweet looking case on your own and build your own Alienware like computer for much much less.. maybe you can't get a case that is exactly the same as the Alienware ones (I know with their older models you can, not sure about their new ones) but you can a case that is just as bad ass with all of the lights/windows/etc. built in.. or you can like I did and have some fun with a Dremel tool and modify any case

being a CS major has ZERO to do with being able to build a PC. Nor does it tell anything about your knowledge when it comes to hardware. Yes, it might be an indicator of whether of not you are 'computer savvy', but it doesn't mean that you are a PC-hardware guru. I have seen too many CS-majors at my college that habe ZERO clue about pc-hardware in order to let that influence my choice.

You are correct about that.. CS is primarily Software Engineering.. it is sad how many CS majors haven't even opened the case to their computers
