MTA,

For an interested beginner, I highly recommend the numark 1520's. They aren't too expensive (~160 apiece), they are direct drive, 10% pitch range, pretty durable...ie you can beat em up pretty bad and they still work fine. I've recommended these to alot of people and they've been very satisfied. If you are just trying to decide if you like it or not enough to blow 1000 on equipment, they are perfect. Very easy to find as well, carried by alot of vendors.
You're gonna need a mixer too, and I also recommend the CITRONIC CDM:1 2 CHANNEL MIXER, it's pretty new, I've heard very very good things, it's cheap, and perfect for starting out, but with enough control that you won't outgrow it too fast.

Hope this helps

Ok guys i think i'm gonna bring back this debate.
What i want is exactly it to listen to vinyls , i don't want to mix , to scratch , or any other thing . So far the cheapest TT i found is Gemini XL-100 (75$) , my question is : is it good for the way i'm gonna use it (listen to vinyls that's all , no mixing , no scratching , no bla bla bla) ??

Id say that they are just fine. Just buy a great pair of needles. and some good RCA cables to hook up to the stereo..

For only listening almost every TT will do the job!! You don't need no pitch control and stuff, so I'd rather look for an hifi TT. By Sony or something. For only listening they are better than the dj-TT. They have all kinds of handy features. For example: at the end of the record the tone-arm will automatically get off the record etc.
So don't by a dj-TT is my advice....

But why dont you just buy a cd-player?? if you don't want to mix, a cd-player is much better! (vinyl is very expensive you know)

Yeh i agree i dunno i just really want a el cheapo turntable to play vinyls because i think the best tracks arnt given justice on a cd! :P i know the quality is probably easier and stuff but id rather shell out a bit more and get the original vinyl... it just seems like its how it was meant to be heard!

You guys are all looking in the wrong direction...

Based from what i hear what you guys want in your systems, i recommend getting one of those "Battle Paks" or "DJ in a Box" kits - they come with 2 turntables, a mixer, all patch cables, (and usually speakers and headphones), and only cost $300 i think....

granted, the tables are no 1200's, but i started out with one of these "DJ in a box" things 4 years ago, and you know what? the shit STILL runs! (i use my 1200's now, but i still have the old setup). The ones i have are Numarks, but any battle kit or DJ in a box thing will do - even Gemini.

Gemini is normally shite, but for what you are looking for they would be fine and hold up for a couple of years...

Havok118 and goodnet are correct, but i don't think they were taking 100% into account about your budgets and plans...

Peace

Shit, just reading this thread is making my blood pressure rise.

Did you not hear the guy? He only wants to listen to his vinyls, not mix. So, FASTDJMP3, go buy whatever that table you had a link to. For just listening you don't need ANYTHING expensive, you could probably even find something at a guarage sale or your local used electronics store for $5 that would work perfectly. Just make sure to get a good needle for whatever you end up getting, it'll make things sound a lot better. I've got a Kenwood TT, for chrisake - it works wonderfully for listening to my old classical vinyls.

You'll need to hook the turntable up to your hifi system (if you don't have one you should probably consider getting one...) check the manual to it to get the specifics of that, but essentially you'll just plug the TT into the back of your amplifier and wonderful sound will pour out the speakers...
