Rush Limbaugh Draws Fire for Racial Remark About Black Quarterbacks
By Ed Wiley III, BET.com Staff Writer

Posted September 30, 2003 -- Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh, now an NFL analyst for ESPN, is again in the hot seat for racially offensive statements.

On Sunday, during ESPN’s televised pregame show, former NFL quarterback Steve Young questioned McNabb’s “ability to run the offense,” saying that his White backup, Koy Detmer, would likely do a better job.

Limbaugh chimed in. “I think the sum of what you’re all saying is that Donavan McNabb is regressing, he’s going backward,” Limbaugh said. “Sorry to say this, I don’t think he’s been that good from the get-go.”

But Limbaugh didn’t stop there.

“The media has been very desirous that a Black quarterback do well. “There is a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team.”

A spokesman for ESPN defended Limbaugh, saying it was an honest discussion about McNabb’s development.

But this isn’t the first time that Limbaugh -- a former radio and TV talk show host, who was a finalist for the Monday Night Football analyst job a couple year ago -- has been criticized for acidic remarks against African Americans. He once told a Black caller to his radio show to “take that bone out of your nose and call me back.” In another instance, he said, “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”

In today’s Philadelphia Inquirer , Phil Sheridan, a White sports columnist, took Limbaugh and his network to task.

“With that record – kept by a group called Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, or FAIR – ESPN gave this guy a job commenting on a league in which the majority of the players are Black. ESPN, which is essentially a corporate partner of the NFL, gave this job to Limbaugh even as the league struggles with its own notorious paucity of minority coaches and general managers.”

The NFL and its coaches have been under fire for many years for their failure to draft or play Black quarterbacks. One of the most tacit criticisms of Black quarterbacks is that they are “good athletes” but lack the intelligence to run complicated offenses or read defenses.

In 1985, Sheridan notes, when the Eagles drafted Randall Cunningham, a journalist asked him, “What makes you think you’ll ever be able to erad NFL defenses?” Three years later, it was big news that Doug Williams, a Black quarterback, was to start in the Super Bowl for Washington that year. (He went on to win most valuable player.) In the days leading up to that game, a White sports writer asked, “How long have you been a Black quarterback?”

“Fortunately for McNabb, his record speaks for itself. But so does Limbaugh’s,” Sheridan said. “Unfortunately for ESPN, as long as he’s on the air, Limbaugh’s record speaks for the network, too.”

Limbaugh isn’t the first White football analyst to draw fire for insensitive comments. In 1988, CBS commentator Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder suggested that Black athletes excelled because they were bred by slave masters to be strong. “The slave owner would breed this big Black with this big Black woman so he could have a big Black kid,” Snyder told a reporter. That's where it all started." Snyder was fired shortly afterward.

In 1983, during a broadcast of Monday Night Football, veteran sports commentator Howard Cosell exclaimed, "Look at that little monkey run!" about Washington Redskins receiver Alvin Garrett, an African American. Cosell resigned two months later, following intense public outcry.

I would ask Rush Limbaugh if he ever heard of Warren Moon, Steve McNair, Dante Culpepper, Kordell Stewart. All black QBs who are there because they are quarterbacks, not because they are black if they can't play they shouldn't be there, black or white. I just found his comment stupid and suggestive that McNabb is first a black quarterback, then an NFL qaurterback. I thought QBs were QBs.

I've listened to his show and in my mind he is without a doubt racist.

When talking about Carole Mosley Braun he plays the theme song from the Jeffersons in the background.

Yes his is a sick mindset.

I thought this was right on:

Rush was Wrong From the Get-go
by Derrick Z. Jackson

IT WAS NOT Rush Limbaugh who choked. It was ESPN and Disney. Limbaugh said only what his venomous mind was capable of thinking. He did not survive even the first quarter of the National Football League season. In a discussion on ESPN's "NFL Sunday Countdown" on why Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was off to a slow start this year, Limbaugh turned McNabb into a fraudulent affirmative action hire.

"I don't think he's been that good from the get-go," Limbaugh said. "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

The resulting protest carried Limbaugh right out of ESPN's booth. He can now go back to fanning ignorance and hate on his own radio talk show. Political pages are not normally the place to get into sports statistics, but even the most rudimentary rundown renders Limbaugh either paranoid, crazy, or both.

McNabb led the Eagles to within one game of the Super Bowl in each of the last two seasons. In 2000, he finished second in the league's Most Valuable Player voting by the Associated Press. He has been to the postseason Pro Bowl for the league's all-stars three times. In one game last season, McNabb broke his ankle on the third play. Thinking it was only a sprain, he completed 20 of 25 passes for 255 yards and four touchdowns before sitting out for six weeks.

Even a slavemaster would have been impressed with the content of McNabb's character. Not so on the Limbaugh plantation. Even though McNabb holds the NFL's third-best winning percentage among active starting quarterbacks, all Limbaugh can see is the color of the quarterback's skin. All Limbaugh can see is a mediocre black man. Limbaugh could not resist using the whip.

That is no surprise, given that Limbaugh has dropped such gems on the American public as once telling a black listener to take a bone out of his nose and declaring that a Mexican won the New York Marathon because an immigration agent chased him for the last 10 miles. The surprise all along was that ESPN, which is owned by Disney, was so willing to throw a race card into a realm of American culture that has achieved a peculiar universal popularity.

In this age of segregated sitcoms, Monday Night Football, which runs on another Disney property, ABC, was the only prime-time television show on the top 10 list of both white and African-American viewers in the 1999-2000 season according to Nielsen Media Research. In last week's Nielsen ratings, Monday Night Football was one of only three shows in the top 10 for both African-American and white viewers.

That is part of an overall trend of universal popularity. A recent Harris Poll found that for the first time, more than twice as many Americans, 29 percent, named pro football rather than baseball (13 percent) as their favorite sport. The poll found that pro football was the favorite sport of 32 percent of white respondents and 31 percent of African-American respondents.

There is plenty that remains wrong in the NFL. Only 10 percent of the head coaches are African-American in a sport where the players are 70 percent African-American. But part of its equal popularity surely is because the position of quarterback has increasingly become one where African-Americans are welcome.

Whereas 16 seasons ago, Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams had to listen to a reporter start a question by saying, "You've been a black quarterback all your life," today's African-American quarterbacks can run for their lives with significantly less worry than yesterday that reviews of their performance are dragged down by the undertow of racist stereotypes.

That progress was not enough for ESPN, which was so desperate to seek a ratings edge with white males, it was willing to sacrifice the sensitivity of African-American viewers. Until the pressure for Limbaugh to resign became too much to ignore, there was either silence or defense of Limbaugh from the hallways of ESPN.

Chris Berman, the anchor of "Sunday Countdown," said "I don't think Rush was malicious in intent or in tone." ESPN spokesman Dave Nagle said, "ESPN hired Limbaugh for his passion and his ability to express opinion and spark debate as a football fan. In just one month, he has certainly delivered." Limbaugh sure did deliver. He delivered one more reason why he himself was never so good from the get-go.

1. Did ESPN really know what they were doing when hiring Limbaugh on as a commentator?

Absolutly. They Know Limbaugh has a rabid fan base, and his presence alone would increase ratings.

quote:
2. Was his comment racially motivated?

Wether or not Rush is a racist may be debatable but the comment is about race, so it must be racially motivated.

quote:
3. Does Rush know a lick about football?

Probably about as much as your average fan. Certantly not enough to get to do a pregame show though.

quote:
4. Should politics and sports ever mix again in the future?

No.

quote:
5. Did Rush have other motivations (i.e. ratings for his own show) when making controversal comments like this one?

I think it was at least partially motivated by ratings, a lot of people will go and watch his show even if they don't agree with his comments regarding mcnabb, just because of all the hoopla.

quote:
6. Was Rush right about McNabb?

McNabb is overrated. However it's not because he's black, it's because our infatuation with his ability to run leaves us blind to his poor pass completion percentage, and bad accuracy in general.

quote:
7. Should Rush ever explore sports ever again?

Not unless the sport is killing yourself or sticking your foot up your own ass.

Where was he during the last Baseball strike? That was a perfect example of that.

Rush was a poor choice, but we are talking about Disney....they are targeting the money making audience and conservative white bigots do make a lot of money per capita.

MrS
I have to give credit to Disney. It runs two news/talk stations here in SF bay area, one is to the right, the other is banalced (has a mix of right, left, and center hosts). the balanced station just celebrated its 25th consecutive year at being #1 in its area

Also don't forget MSNBC, it fired Donahue because he wasnt flag waving enough and mostly had anti-war guests, even though he had the most ratings over all the other MSNBC programs.

Life sure has a funny sense of irony:

Limbaugh admits addiction to pain medication

quote:
(CNN) --Rush Limbaugh announced on his radio program Friday that he was addicted to pain medication and that he was checking himself into a treatment center immediately.

"You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life," the conservative commentator said in a statement on his nationally syndicated radio show.

"I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication."

Law enforcement sources said last week that Limbaugh's name had come up during an investigation into a black market drug ring in Palm Beach County, Florida. The sources said that authorities were looking into the illegal sales of the prescription drugs OxyContin and hydrocodone.

Limbaugh, who has a residence in Palm Beach County, was named by sources as a possible buyer. He was not the focus of the investigation, according to the sources.

The radio talk show host said he first became addicted to painkillers "some years ago," following spinal surgery. However, he added, "the surgery was unsuccessful and I continued to have severe pain in my lower back and also in my neck due to herniated discs. I am still experiencing that pain."

He had tried to break his dependence in the past and has checked himself into medical facilities twice before, he said.

Limbaugh said that he is "not making any excuses" and that he is "no role model."

"I refuse to let anyone think I am doing something great here, when there are people you never hear about, who face long odds and never resort to such escapes. They are the role models," he said.

I think this "sorta" falls along the same lines...

quote:

ESPN.com news services

Jan Stephenson, never a stranger to controversy during her 30-plus years in professional golf, says in an interview that the LPGA should regulate the number of foreign players on tour, must market its players' sex appeal and that commissioner Ty Votaw isn't the right man for the job.

Jan Stephenson, 51, said she was inspired by Annika Sorenstam's play at the Colonial earlier this year.

In the course of answering Kessler's questions about the LPGA's marketing problems, Stephenson said: "This is probably going to get me in trouble, but the Asians are killing our tour. Absolutely killing it. Their lack of emotion, their refusal to speak English when they can speak English. They rarely speak.

"We have two-day pro-ams where people are paying a lot of money to play with us, and they say hello and goodbye. Our tour is predominantly international and the majority of them are Asian. They've taken it over."

Four of the top six players on the LPGA money list this week are Asian, including Se Ri Pak, Grace Park, Hee-Won Han and Candie Kung.

"If I were commissioner, I would have a quota on international players and that would include a quota on Asian players," Stephenson told Kessler. "As it is, they're taking American money. American sponsors are picking up the bill. There should be a qualifying school for Americans and a qualifying school for international players. I'm Australian, an international player, but I say America has to come first. Sixty percent of the tour should be American, 40 percent international."

Votaw countered, telling USA Today: "Attendance, TV viewership, Web site traffic and purses are up. That does not suggest a tour that is being damaged by any one group."

South Korean native Grace Park, playing in the Samsung World Championships in The Woodlands, Texas, took exception to the comments.

Stephenson also said that sex appeal helps men's golf -- and should help the women's game.

"We have to promote sex appeal. It's a fact of life. The people who watch are predominantly male, and they won't keep watching if the girls aren't beautiful. That's not just the LPGA Tour, either. In Australia the highest-rated television event is the women's surf championship. Why is that?"

Later, she said: "Everyone wants to skirt it, but it's true. You have Tiger [Woods] and Phil and Adam Scott and Aaron Baddeley. They are gorgeous. Their clothes are beautiful; everything about them is exciting. So we have to catch up. The women are not the best players -- the men are. The women are not the best athletes -- the men are. Whether we like it or not, we have to promote sex, because sex sells. I think you have to shock."

Stephenson posed in a bathtub full of golf balls in a famous 1986 photo, and also posed for a revealing calendar.

In discussing Votaw, Stephenson said that he is doing the best he can, but that the commissioner should be a marketing person, not an attorney. She also voiced concerns over Votaw's current dating of LPGA Tour player Sophie Gustafson.

"It's hard to accept the timing. I'm concerned that their relationship affects the future of the LPGA and its ability to secure more sponsors," Stephenson said. "I'm in no position to judge anybody on what they do personally, but I could see sponsors saying, 'We don't think it's right for the commissioner to be sleeping with a player.' And if sponsors think it's wrong, then it's wrong."

South African Bobby Lincoln, who shot a 71 in the opening round of the Turtle Bay event, said he experienced what Stephenson described about the Asian women with male players on the Asian Tour.

"I agree with her," he said. "It's a funny tour because the players play the round and off they go. No one ever goes to a function. No one talks even though they can speak a bit of English.

"She's quite right, off they go and they don't care too much."

excerpts from: http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=1635065

I only find this interesting as it is along the lines of people saying things about another race/ethnicity profiling. True statements or not about marketing and media no matter "actual skill"...Rush ain't the only one that shoots their mouth off. It just won't be as big of a story since it doesn't have to do with A: a big time sport - Football and B: include a Political Big Mouth.

If anything it's a bit of a laugh.
