ahhh, i wish i still had that article about this! many teachers and professors have become annoyed because internet/AIM language has crept into academic papers. not silly abbreviations like lol and omfg, but some other stuff (poor memory).

on the flip side, some teachers have commented that students are more sensitive to what their writing conveys and the precise tone that one word or sentence construction can create. think about middle school girls throwing hissy fits and taking hidden stabs at each other over AIM. they can express exactly what they are trying to say pretty succintly and extremely accurately because they become comfortable with the written word in a social manner.

the only other complaint is that because students are writing each other with AIM and email so much, their papers are likely to have a tone that is too casual and conversational for an academic paper.

point is: not all bad!

p.s. -- PLEASE edit the title of this thread if you can. it's Affect, not effect (pet peeve of a grammar nazi). i'll only bore you with the grammar lesson if you ask

yeah i played counterstrike for a while and i'd make jokes about people being all 'l33t' and then all of a sudden everyone was saying woot woot!
and the worst part is you know the sound of an actual holler? (like oo OOH!)
well everyone thought it was woot WOOT! for a long time
i wanted to die
and my friend says rofl but just to piss people off
we only ever use em when we're in goofy moods and feel like being dumb
but seriously the worst is lol
IF YOU'RE GOING TO LAUGH, FREAKING DO IT!!!!!!
DON'T SAY LOL THEN NOT ACTUALLY LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!!!1
