I'm an amateur DJ and I'm not sure how much further I'll go, but here's my 2 cents worth. IMO you need good equipment for any type of work, so it's a choice between spending money on computers/software, or on conventional DJ turntables/CD decks.
I like Traktor, it runs fine on a fast computer and quality sound card, but it has a few minor bugs and problems. But if I go further, it will be as a computer DJ, because it's obvious that computers and software will get better, while those who use turntables are using a technology that is not going to get much better.
If you have quality CDs or vinyl records it's possible to do a good job of ripping them so you get the same sound quality from the mp3. If you don't want to compress the music to mp3 you can use WAV files which is the format on a regular audio CD.
I did some tests where I digitized a new vinyl record into my computer, and compared the sound from vinyl, WAV, 128k mp3 and 256k mp3, and I could hear very little difference. I do all my own mp3 rips at 256k which is probably overkill. Other people who did a bad ripping job on mp3s you might have found on the WWW, might have been using poorly recorded records or CDs, bad turntables, incorrect recording levels from vinyl, and older low-quality mp3 encoder software.
It seems to me that a DJ does a lot of things. If he or she gets some help from the computer in some of those activities, he's still a DJ. He needs to listen to LOTS of music, select and learn about his genres of music, select the tracks he will play, decide on the playing sequence, move the tracks onto the real or virtual decks, get the tracks into the right position, do beatmatching, do the transition mix, and maybe do some additional mixing during the track play.
The computer can help with some of that work, maybe with the beatmatching if the DJ is using the right type of music. Definitely the computer can help the DJ find the tracks and put them on the decks. The DJ can use the time saved to observe the dance floor reactions, plan and set up the next tracks, or just relax and have a little more fun. In other words, potentially the computer can help someone do a better job.
I probably shouldn't be saying all this. I want everyone out there, who could be competitors, to just stay away from computers, OK? They're very bad.

Im only going to use computers to practice DJing untill i get my decks. Im DJing in chicago in 2006, and i need all the practice i can get.
And if you want to hear a good(in my opinion) computer DJ, get at track by DJ Doboy. My favorite is Trancequility Special Summer Edition Vol. 1.

if you read my post, i said if that is as far as you are going to go (as in, only mp3 mixing), then you dont deserve the title of dj. anyone like me doesnt deserve to be a dj? ive been using decks for over 2 fuckin years, dont even bring that shit to me. and yes everyone does have to start out somewhere, and back to my original post, if you arent going further than mp3 djing, then you dont deserve the title of dj
