I would love to have a mix with three t/tables.

What i do is line the next track up straight away then mix from breakdowns into breakdows, but i play techno which is better for quick mixes than trance.

amen to that. my setup makes me stare right at my wall, so i do stuff online, read some stuff or other things during a mix hehe. this definitely does cause me to mix too early, cut out the second break down. lately ive learned to add beats from one track onto the breakdown/tune on another track, so that the beat never really stops. this is kind of hard and requires fast ass beatmatching, but its fun. i do this in clubs now too, i recommed you try it. practice with a track with a loooooong constant bass (i used cosmic gate - fire wire (club mix)) i would play the bass/kick over other tracks when it was cut out for singing etc etc. fun stuff, and blocks boredom.. some at least.

There are so many things you can do. To list a few.

w/o effects machine:
0. READ THE CROWD
1. Volume dips
2. Bass dips and other EQ dips
3. Teasing with a sample from upcoming track
4. Cuts - yes you can cut with the less melodic trance tracks
5. Beat-swapping
6. If you have two of the same record: double-buildup.
7. If you're doing progressive, 3 records at once.
8. Mashups
9. Don't let tracks play until the end. (Sometimes breakdowns can disrupt a groove)

with effects machine:
too much to list

FYI, any decent bedroom dj can string two tracks together and call it djing. That should be the bare minimum. What you do on top of that is where your style and creativity comes in.

I always thought the second breakdowns were stuck in there to save you if you fuck up anyway.

There's a difference between 2nd breakdown and 2nd buildup. A buildup is usually found in a breakdown but it's not the entire breakdown because the entire breakdown can be boring.

Well since I don't play at clubs, if its a long track, I might;

diddle around on my computer (chat or whatever)
get some food
sit down, and just look at what tunes I want to bring in
tell my siblings to stfu

yea, it can get pretty boring sometimes though

well i spin hard trance so i don't really have the problem of a looong ass track, hard trance has a lot more stuff happening than melodic..i tend to like mixing out after the second break, or even the first, if it took a good while to get there. i don't really measure by breaks, i measure by: has the song gotten to the good part? and i'm not mixing into a climax or breakdown. (which never happens cuz i can just read the grooves)

stuff i like to do though, is sample the next record. what i found is that on many of my records that have a vocal samle, they will put the vocal only on the very first seconds of the record. i like to use that to sample into the next record.

also, mess w/ the bass eqs.

Thats what I love to do, I've done it afew times infront of a crowd, and they start goin nuts, and you see some punters that start goin at it cos they think you just mixed it in, when really it ain't gonna be mixed in for like 4 minutes, so for some of those punters, by the time you do mix it in, there low on energy and finding it hard to keep going.

Hi

When not mixing, I am usually using either my sampler or using my fx's on my mixer. If not either of those i'll be doing loads of scratching, or i'll be having a go at doing sampling, plus fx's & a little bit of scratching at the same time, but this requires a hell of alot of speed. Also i blend alot of tracks together for like 5-7 mins, depending on track lengths. I drop accapellas. I basically just do what I want & try out new ideas & just do what comes to mind. If it doesnt work, it doesnt work.

Theres shit loads of stuff you can do. All you have to do is be a little imaginative. Combine stuff, come up with new stuff. Theres no rules & regualtions that say dj like this, or like that.

So just do what you want and have a good time, but dont over do it. Sometimes: Less Is More.
