The priapism theory likely applies to females too. Their genitals also become engorged with blood during sex, though less visible than males (females also usually have some sort of sex downtime too where they don't have much pleasure...)
The vaginal tissue is also more likely to tear than a penis' in sex, especially if there's not enough lubrication. Even with good lubrication you can still tear it, though.
