i mix breakdowns of two track together and it always sounds damn good. you just have to learn how to do it. there are a few different way i do it. the easiest is if you have two tracks that have breakdowns with no beat at the beginning of them. just drop the beginning of one when the other starts and fade out. of course this doesn't work evertime but that's why you learn your records well. it works especially well if the breakdowns are both long.

I have to agree with you on that one vio.
Sometimes you get records that just sound like gold together, but there is also a fair bit of musical ear required to do that well.

Took the liberty to check out some of your mixes. If anyone is interested to hear someone who uses key changes to create energy then vio is your man. Nice one

Cheers
Nem

nemesis hit it pretty well

i have a couple of songs that have long breakdowns/buildups in which i like to throw in a new beat of a song and transition out of the other song as the break down ends. using the buildup of the old song with the new pumping beat of the new track to build up the energy (or ease the energy level down a bit after the huge emtional build up).
a good example of this is in Sasha's GU San francisco CD 2 when the beat of movin' through your system hits during the peak of the buildup of twilo thunder.

mixing into a breakdown can work out really nice. depends on the tracks, and genre, of course I think breakdown mixing works better with house than trance, but then again, not many styles of mixing work with trance :P

One thing I tend to do, is start another record on the first beat (or phrase before/after) of a breakdown, wait for 2 or 4 phrases of the breakdown to pass, then slap in the intro bass beats on a phrase transition during the breakdown. There's usually atleast a few points in the average breakdown where it "feels" like the energy is going to come back.. mini-buildups, basically. use these points to bring in the bass beats of another track, just make sure all your phrases are lined up properly.

done properly, the intro beats add energy to the second half or so of the breakdown, and phrasematched properly, the breakdown will end right into the buildup of the next track and you can slam right into the buildup phrase of the next track.

umm, I find breaks the best time to mix. As long as you beatmatch you can have fun. Try putting the bass of the second song into the break of the first. People who don't beatmatch aren't really DJs, just people who wish they were a DJ.
