All shrinks do is help the client help themselves. Everyone has it in them to fix their problems, but shrinks might just give their opinion from a distant perspective and open their eyes a little bit more.
Also I don't think it takes years of education to give good advice, I've had deep conversations and stuff with a friend and she said that I gave better advice than counsellors shes had.
TA therapy is good cus I think there's a wide range of diverse people on here, often it might seem better than having the single mind of a shrink.

Personal change, understanding and happiness come from within, not without. While another person (a shrink, a friend, an anonymous forum poster) may help you to see things that you otherwise wouldn't, ultimately it's all up to you. A psychologist can only help if you're willing to do your own introspection outside of the clinic: he cannot "cure" you, he can only help you to "cure" yourself.

If the problem is physical (i.e. a neurological deficiency) rather than mental (i.e. purely in the mind - a way of thinking) then I don't think a "shrink" would be much use. If one's depression is linked to, for instance, serotonin depletion, frontal lobe deficiencies or a chemical imbalance then it's probably a psychiatrist or a neurologist that you need to see rather than a psychologist.

Heh, yeah I like Freud too.
I'm not sure how scientifically valid his ideas are now, but his impact on 20th century philosophy - at the very least - has been huge.
