The first electric light was invented by englishman Humphry Davy.

The first practical lightbulb was also invented by an englishman... Joseph Swan.

Those canadians just came up with something inbetween , Edison bought the patent and fiddled with it for a bit, making it commercially viable, he patented it a year after swan, and swan latter sucessfuly took him to court over it.
