although i wish i had a lot of classics on vinyl, i have to agree to some extent that the rarity is one of the attractions to a good song. i mean, the best thing is finding great songs that no one else knows about and get everyone asking...damn what the hell is that song its awesome.

Okay let's just leave that to Disney DVD videos of Snow White and 7 Dwarfs and Cinderella.

Theres a lot more then spending money to collecting rare vinyls. If you are really willing to look hard and for a long time you will find great deals on rare vinyls. For example just today I got the black hole pressings of The Magik Tales EP (BH 101) and Space age Inventions (BH 102) for 1.50 canadian each!!! I feel that I have put a lot of hard work into building a collection that features records that most people dont have so that when I spin I can spin different stuff then what everyone else is. I think when tracks are repressed it totally devalues that time and energy.

Agreed, re-presses are good. Everyone gets access to good tunes and re-presses dont de-value an original pressing because its still 'the' original.

I disagree, when you play out in a club or event your main goal is to excite the crowd, NOW when there is a song that everyone has access to then what makes that DJ unique?? Same goes for going to a event to hear bigger Djs, its not always the experience of feeling that a massive Dj is among yourselves, but more of that they will play songs that have never been heard of and in a different way, thats what makes the Dj unique...

Now say i've been searching for a song for ages (2 years) and when i do get it i feel so excited that among many people that there will be a small amount of people with this current vinyl, say it got repressed and a newbie Dj who has just started grabs the repress after 2 minutes of searching, won't that lost the value of dedication...

It's how you play and how you choose the song, if all Djs played the same stuff, what is the use of a second Dj.

Yeah but a re-press isnt an original, the original is intrinsically and sentimentally worth more than a re-press.
Think of it in terms of CD burning. I have Ulrich Schnauss - 'Far away trains passing by', a rare album - only 3000 made I think. I have made copies for mates, increasing the amount of albums around, but that doesnt reduce the value of my original, because they are copies.

Yeh i know but the fact is that aquiring a rare song has more satisfaction than having a older version of a new release...

DOWN with represses IMO..

I mean come on, search for the songs, spend heaps of money getting that song...don't make it available to everyone...i know this might sound silly BUT do you know that Armin Universal Religion Vinyl how they said it was limited to 1000 copies, now the owners of those vinyls must have a feeling of satisfaction that they acquired something hard to come by, now if they repress 2000 more how would you feel???

Yeah, that sort of stuff pisses me off, because that directly affects the value of the 1st presses because others that are exactly the same are made. I was talking about re-presses in the true context, such as when Hooj Choons began a re-press series, one of which was Cygnus X - The Orange theme. And the Lost language Exhibition vinyl album which has Solar Stone - Seven Cities (Atlantis mix) on it. These are totally different to the original releases of these tunes and thus give people access to good tunes but dont affect the aura held by the original's.

However, I know what your going to say now.............. neither of my examples were rare tunes/releases in the first place..........Right?

So I suggest a common ground:-

Re-presses of classics/older tunes is a good thing because more people get access to great music.

Re-presses/re-releases of rare tunes is not necessarily a good thing because in doing so they cease to become rare.

What do you think Psygnosis?

Agreed 100%, rare songs should never be touched i.e songs that have been limited to a small amount and released a from a long period...i mean it's that what gives it the rare name, the timeline???

Songs like The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia should get re-pressed i think, first off all it's well sought after and it's not rare...BUT there are a few songs like the MEA CULPA TIME AND MOTION EP that shouldn't be touched of it's rarity.
