Is Civilization II without a doubt. There's no strategy game out there better than this one (I see the above ones, they're OK), and even though the graphics might not be as good for Civ2, but the game itself is awesome ....

whole unique generals thing adds way more strategy
zero hour is by far my fav. rts

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Medieval Total War yet... I've not bought another RTS since that cos nothing can compare.

Played demo versions of Age of Mythology and Rise of nations and wasn't impressed. Just clones of Age of Empires and Empire Earth etc. The thing that annoys me with the games is they never change and u always get too few units and usually just single men. Surely total war has the best method, where it has 1 unit which can be up to 200 men and no unrealistic health meters just 'men left standing'.

custom games on starcraft or warcraft III kicks ass very good games if u are bored hehe
