Agreed. This is a problem as well, because trance is the atypical voice of electronic music, people associate IT (trance) with "the scene". Leading to more confusion about trance and if it's decreased in popularity (and quality).

I honestly don't think that's true. Maybe within the Toronto bubble it's become sort of mainstream, but in general?

There are other genres that have penetrated the mainstream... atmospheric DnB, chemical breaks, some of the new ambient/downtempo stuff, and let's not forget the video game music which I suppose is kind of a spin-off of electro. I think the only house music that was ever really mainstream was the '80s synthpop and '90s eurodance (which are both types of house music, no matter how reluctant you house addicts are to admit it). In other words, house music has only ever really reached the mainstream when there was some new cheesy spinoff genre.

Just my two cents though... breaks and jungle have the most mainstream potential, not trance or house.

I think on paper, you're wrong. Based on record sales, attendance at parties and what not. (or fuck, the dj list)

(re: house getting bigger)
You're right in that I'm wrong in my assumptions. And P.S I was basing those observations more on the UK/ Toronto scene and from online relationships. (which yes I've made due to being in the scene)

So anyways, back to Trance being dead. lol

The number of Trance DJs in Top 100 is decreasing because most Trance fans are voting for 4 DJs - Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Armin and Ferry. These 4 are MUCH MORE popular than any other Trance DJ - that's why you don't see too many others in the list.

It's not like with progressive where are probably at least 10 great DJs to choose from.

Trance won't die, but it might become commercial. Generally, trance is much more "likable" style of music than other forms of electronica, so I'd be very surprised if it's popularity will decrease.

lol... yeah... those things do speak for the size of their respective scenes. I was referring more to being played on radio stations, used in TV commercials, that kind of stuff. I think we were using the word "mainstream" to mean different things.

And re: the original topic (trance being dead), what we're seeing with the DJ list isn't really the death of trance, just the more prominent emergence of other, newer genres. In a twisted way, I suppose that does mean it's dying, because eventually it will get swamped by the other genres. I'm on the neurofunk/Swedish techno bandwagon myself, gotta have some new material to spice things up. But, like the rock music of old, classic trance will probably continue to have a huge following even after it's "past its prime" so to speak.

The thing about house music and jungle in particular is that they're always finding new "face lifts" and ways to prolong their existence; trance doesn't have much evolutionary space left, except for hardstyle. Oh sure, the new productions are cleaner, fuller, more interesting to listen to, but the musical form hasn't changed since the late 90's. So, its popularity isn't waning, but it's not going up either.

Yep i definitely agree with Durafei here...When you were voting you could only choose what...4 or 5 people was it? Since Those at the top 4 are the main drivers of the genre it's quite obvious why they are mostly the ones chosen.

I'm assuming you mean techno in particular...

Ah, you assume wrong.

I am referring to other genres like house, prog, breaks, techno.

Two things that lead me to think that these genres are gaining popularity, and trance is losing it, are:

- The number of non-trance DJs inching up on that list.
- The decreasing number of DJs who play PURELY trance. Tiesto shouldn't even count as one, because he's really started to mold his sound to include more prog and more techno. Sasha and Digweed - not strictly trance. Ya follow?

Fact is, 1998-99 was the peak of the trance scene, and it will be a looooong time before it gets that big again.

trance is alive and well.

IMHO 2003 has been the strongest year yet for trance.
