I think on paper, you're wrong. Based on record sales, attendance at parties and what not. (or fuck, the dj list) |
lol... yeah... those things do speak for the size of their respective scenes. I was referring more to being played on radio stations, used in TV commercials, that kind of stuff. I think we were using the word "mainstream" to mean different things.
And re: the original topic (trance being dead), what we're seeing with the DJ list isn't really the death of trance, just the more prominent emergence of other, newer genres. In a twisted way, I suppose that does mean it's dying, because eventually it will get swamped by the other genres. I'm on the neurofunk/Swedish techno bandwagon myself, gotta have some new material to spice things up. But, like the rock music of old, classic trance will probably continue to have a huge following even after it's "past its prime" so to speak.
The thing about house music and jungle in particular is that they're always finding new "face lifts" and ways to prolong their existence; trance doesn't have much evolutionary space left, except for hardstyle. Oh sure, the new productions are cleaner, fuller, more interesting to listen to, but the musical form hasn't changed since the late 90's. So, its popularity isn't waning, but it's not going up either.

I don't know if you have a case, but it's an interesting one. Can you elaborate...
I'm assuming you mean techno in particular... |
Ah, you assume wrong.
I am referring to other genres like house, prog, breaks, techno.
Two things that lead me to think that these genres are gaining popularity, and trance is losing it, are:
- The number of non-trance DJs inching up on that list.
- The decreasing number of DJs who play PURELY trance. Tiesto shouldn't even count as one, because he's really started to mold his sound to include more prog and more techno. Sasha and Digweed - not strictly trance. Ya follow?
Fact is, 1998-99 was the peak of the trance scene, and it will be a looooong time before it gets that big again.
