I am thanking her for suppling news that we would otherwise not see. North Americans and Americans in particular see very little news outside the CNN-type mainstream. The US is in its own sheltered world.
When I refer to ignorant and small-minded, I am speaking specifically to those who lack the objectivity to entertain different perspectives that conflict with their own judgements and prejudices. Denial is always the most difficult reaction to overcome, and it is expressed in many ways - most commonly through dismissal of premise and/or predicate.
Although I am aware of the inherent and systemic bias in CNN/North American mainstream news, I still watch and observe objectively. I identify the flaws and I seek alternative sources to help form a more complete and comprehensive understanding.
All news is biased. In what is said and, more importantly, in what is conveniently/intentionally omitted.
With regards to the Israeli occupation, they have a highly skilled and armed military, backed and funded by the US. Palestine does not. They are not allowed to. Israel is systematically settling and occupying new territories almost daily (see settlement maps, and the construction of the electrical fence which juts deep into palestinian territory). Palestine's military consists of an occasional suicide bomber. They have no tanks or combat choppers. Once in a while, someone is pissed off enough to say "fuck it, I'm going to strap a bomb to ass and explode it inside the enemy territory".
I didn't need to read a biased source to see what is really happening, but this source is giving a clearer picture of the reality of the conflict than anything you will see on the 6:00 news.
Question everything. Look beyond what you are being fed by corporate America.
It ain't easy.
