Anyone with a basic knowledge of anatomy knows that the rectum and vagina share a common wall. What most people don't know is that the erogenous nerve endings in that wall which are stimulated by vaginal intercourse are actually closer to the surface of the rectum than that of the vagina.
What this means, quite simply, is that combined with manual clitoral stimulation, a woman receiving anal sex has greater potential for the simulation of erogenous tissue than a woman receiving vaginal sex! This being the case, one must wonder why more couples don't choose to partake in anal sex (although a nationwide survey conducted by the University of California San Francisco concluded that over one quarter of heterosexual couples practice anal sex at least occasionally).
Generally, the reason people tend to avoid anal sex is ignorance. Just reading through this thread I can see that many TA's, despite typically being more open-minded than the general population, have been duped by the many myths and misconceptions regarding anal intercourse.
Let's examine some of these misconceptions empirically:
1. Anal sex is painful
Anal sex can be painful, but only if done improperly. With proper use of lubrication the recipient shouldn't feel any pain at all. Some people who experiment with anal sex don't use any lubrication at all, then afterwards go around telling everyone how painful it is. They are, unfortunately, a significant source of misinformation when it comes to anal sex.
2. Anal sex is messy
If the recipient has defecated fairly recently, there is no reason anal sex should be messy. A high-fiber diet helps, but is far from necessary.
3. Anal sex can cause health problems such as incontinence or hemorrhoids
This is, quite simply, completely made up. There is absolutely no scientific evidence linking anal intercourse with any of these kinds of problems. It is somewhat easier to contract STD's through anal intercourse - but if you practice safe sex this shouldn't be a concern.
4. Anal sex is unnatural.
Anal sex has been an accepted sexual practice in many cultures for centuries. It ceratinly isn't any more unnatural than oral sex. This is the kind of stupid reason you typically hear coming from the side of religion.
Like any activity, whether or not you're going to enjoy anal sex has a lot to do with the attitude you take towards it. If you simply can't open your mind and let go of the misguided notions that it's a dirty, unnatural act that's going to be painful and give you STDs, then you aren't going to enjoy it.
However, an ever-increasing portion of the population in America and around the world are finding that incorporating anal sex into their sexual activity is a pleasurable and enriching experience.
