Don't mean to hurt your feelings montie (or anyone who owns one) but the empath is a just a plain cratch mixer on steriods.
Sure it has some interesting functions but it doesn't compare to an A+H or even a DJM600.
I know I'm probably gonna get a load of flack for this but the DJM 600 (and the DJM range in general) is quite a shit mixer.
It's functions allthough varied are nothing more than gimmicks and if used other than very sparingly it just gets damn annoying.
This is not why I say they are crap. It's the build quality and component choice which lets it down. For not much change from £650 i would expect nothing less than highest quality with tank like durability, but while working for one of Europe largest pro audio equipment and dj retailers, I saw first hand how many people came back with them saying " the pots are crackling / this bit stopped working / etc etc etc". For that much money it's just not acceptable.
A+H on the other hand are rock hard and (apart from the odd out the box problems) they're really solid quality, hence why so many clubs use them.
I have literally sold hundreds of mixers to now happy dj's and producers and choosing the right one is simply down to wporking what suits you personally.
Ask yourself these :
how many outputs do I need?
How many inputs do I need (simultanious or otherwise?)
How many fader channels do I want?
What type of cue monitoring do I prefer?
Do I need x-fader curve control?
Do i need mic inputs?
What on board FX do I want, if any?
Once you have your spec, see what are the closest matches within your budget.
Finally remember to to see if you feel comfortable/like the layout/sound quality etc. as it may well suit your hardward needs but is not a joy to mix on and that's what really counts. If you can't perform your best on it, what's the point?
To address one other thing: You need to upgrade you sound system rather than your mixer in future : it's like buying a porsche than putting mud in the fuel tank; your doing yourself no favours.
Lastly remember : it's more about ability than equipment and nearly allways, the bigger and more expensive the the mixer, the tinyer the penis.

the x9 is not a ripoff of the djm600. yes they do have similar layouts.. ive used both. and trust me, the x9 is superior. dual effects/samplers, eq freq range knobs, 24 bit quality, digital inputs.. and much more. the x9 is a djm600 on steroids. trust me, i own one.
i havent had a chance to try an a&h but ive read nothing but great things about them. and the xone:62 was named the "best club mixer" 2 years in a row by DJ mag, so im assuming its good. you could also wait till dec 2003 when the xone:92 comes out.
