The activity for each genre in this city ebbs and flows - we all know that.

i totally agree.. when you see more or less of one genre's events, it doesn't necessarily mean that the other ones are regressing .. everything's in a constant state of flux. Traditionally, late winter / early spring time has usually been big in TO for trance events..

Well, Goldclub was sponsored by Benson and Hedges cigarettes and the Canadian government passed anti-tobacco legislation that prohibits any kind of tobacco firm sponsoring cultural or social events because they feel that sponsors use it to advertise their product. I think it took effect in October, which is why Goldclub is now out of the Canadian Dance event business. It's sad really....but I can see it from both sides. As a I smoker, I personally feel targeted these days with all the anti-smoking laws, but on the flip side, I realise that it's a major health issue and about 75% of Canadian DO NOT smoke.
But I think, in the end, that if Tobacco companies want to antie up the dough for sporting events and the like when no other corporations will.....why not let them? As long as they don't over advertise their product.

I'm just glad to see breakz being promoted in clubs like System. Trance is all well and good, you know guys like Ferry and Tiesto will always come back, and I for one welcome the diversity in talent being brought to the clubs. Breaks, Prog House, Hard House, Tribal...we need more, hell we need it all !

I thought I've seen events still being done by B&H and The Hump, but just more discreetly.
I heard there were cigarette girls at Hawtin not that long ago.
EDIT: Hawtin was on Oct 30th, but Goldclub's THEORY was on the 31st...perhaps the legislation kicked in November 1st?

Hmmm yeah that's true I still see all those goldclub cigarette girls at the Guvernment quite a lot on all the events...just never see the big GOLDCLUB promotions and ads anywhere anymore...But that makes sense with the tobacco laws and all...Almost cost MTL the Formula 1 race...that's just stupid. It's such a huge event and gives MTL so much publicity they should do anything to keep the race (As far as I know it's still on)

I agree. I am an old trance girl at heart but lovin' the Dirty House, Prog, Breaks and Tribal depending on my mood.
I gave up on the GoldSeries events as they were no longer about the music but about the lasers, tube tops and glitter...and a complete lack of space on the dancefloor. Give me a night with some elbow room and some die hards!
