Is ATB commercial?
Well, I don't think that his first track (9PM Till I Come) was all that commercial. A bit cheesy maybe, but certainly quite innovative at the time. I mean it's not his fault that it was the victim of complete overkill from unimaginative Dj's world-wide, and before it blew up and became boring from complete overplay, yeah it wasn't a bad track.
But then he lost the plot in my opinion and sold out completely. All his tracks sound the same, and his first album (Movin' Melodies) was absolute shite. His music lacked imagination and inspiration and, again in my opinion, has all the hallmarks of someone who's only in it for the money. In my book he's on the same level as Sash and Alice Deejay (i.e. not worth considering if you take music in the least bit seriously).
I do disagree with PVD though, ATB isn't is a shit trance producer. He's just a shit producer. Calling him a trance artist is just giving him undeserved credibility (especially seeing as none of his music sounds particularly trancy to me in the first place).
As for his deejaying skills? Well I wouldn't know. Never seen/heard him spin.

i dunno about you but 9pm till i come was played over and over and over on radio here.
I like ATB, but many people have prove a point, he does music in like less then or in 30 mins, thats very cheap and efortless , while PVD and others take days to make a decent part of the song , or the song, if you know what I mean .. but ATB has been able to come up with very catchy flow of music, and I like it .

u says he is commercial trance. I say hes not even trance.
u r blurring the lines tween dance and trance. Alice Deejay, Vengaboys, ATB I think they are all dance music. Maybe ATB is more trance-ish but I still think its dance music.

its really just a fine line between trance and dance eh?
you're either it or you're not. personally i think he is trance.
i agree with both tranceDJ and LiquidX.
i too have also seen him play a live set here in texas, and he was great, totally different from what he produces. plus one more thing i wanna add is that "9pm till i come" was VERY inovative and original for its time, dont forget it came out in 1998! thats a long time ago.

in 1998 there was a lot of good stuff, and look at 1999 it was the year of trance, so they were popular because it was a good dance song, not trance.

Though he hasn't produced anything lately, as a producer he's great. His new album "Two Worlds" is a quality effort. And no matter how commercialized "Till I Come" and "Don't Stop" were those songs are what got me into trance music.
As a DJ he is also really good. In fact I put ATB @ Trance Energy (2-17-01) into my top ten live sets list. I saw him live in Austin last March and he he dropped a really good set (but he didn't try his hardest like at Trance Energy).
ATB @ Austin, Texas 3-23-01 (What I could ID out of his setlist)
1. ATB-9PM Till I Come (Signum Mix)
2. Warp Brothers vs. Aquagen- Phat Bass
3. Marc Et Claude- Loving You (Dark Moon Remix)
4. ATB-Fields Of Love (York Club Mix)
5. Mauro Picotto-Proximus
6. Gouryella-Tenshi (ATB Remix)
7. Fast-Transmission
9. Delerium-Silence (Tiesto In Search of Sunrise Remix)
Pretty damn good track selection!

I agree that his first album Movin Melodies was commercial, and was nothing more than a money making scam. However his next album Two Worlds has a lot more skill in it, and i don't think is too commercial (apart from Fields of Love). I think the second CD of that album is terrific...just great chilled trance.

I really liked the 9pm remix, but all his other stuff is just too mellow for me. The fields of love was pretty good- but when remixed :/ I guess to say in his favor tho- that the remixes still have his beats in them. But still, his music puts me to sleep.
