I see the future possibly being audio on DVDs or something similar that has a large capacity. If you only put a song or two on a DVD then you'd have much better sound quality (for those who are familiar with the lingo, this is because DVDs can fit more bits of information on them leading to lower quantization errors) and I'm sure that it would be nearly impossible to distinguish between the two (even on large systems).
The big advantage of vinyls is that the sound is not digital so there is no loss in sound quality when you press a vinyl. The disadvantage is that it wears out the more you play them.
A few months back in the DJ booth I saw some turntables that used lasers to read vinyls. This would eliminate needles and needle wear, allowing you to play vinyls as much as you want without wearing them out. The downside at the moment is they don't have pitch adjustment as far as I know, they are just for listening at the standard 33 or 45 rpm. Another downside is that they cost about $20000 a piece if I remember correctly. If the costs come down and they start making them where you can very the speed of the platter then I see this as a major contender for the future of DJing. If this were to materialize, for safety reasons the turntable would have to be built like a CDJ where the record is inside and some sort of artificial platter would be on the outside to control the vinyl (like a CDJ or the new Technics CD player).
I believe that it was Agent Smith who posted the link on these turntables a couple of months back.

Cheers.
PS: Some of the sentences are quite long and ugly. I'm sorry, I just wanted to get my thoughts down. =)
