As other people here have mentioned, this synth is the end all and be all for pads and atmospheric type effects. You can also make some incredible basses and leads with it as well.

Well, I've held my tongue too long about this. I have to say that the leads on Atmosphere are the best I have EVER come across. With all of the programming versatility of it, one can make an almost unlimited amount of, not Virtual Analog, but analog (in a way) leads.
With the legendary, that's right, legendary, pads and the monster leads and legendary atmospheres and HUGE basses, I dare say it's the most stunning acheivement in synthesis since the Minimoog.
Eric Persing has dedicated himself to making "sample-based instruments" (rather than his former concentration on sample cds). These "sample-based instruments" are the future of sound.
It's funny, I see a lot of posts around here about trying to get good basslines and bass sounds. One word. Trilogy.
Think about it, this is Persing's FIRST attempt at an instrument. Can you imagine what's in store for the future at Spectrasonics?!.
For those of you who are interested in Mr. Persing work, and if you say you haven't heard it then just go watch three or four commercials, I guarantee you'll AT LEAST one of his sounds, there is a VERY interesting interview with him at Northern Sounds.
Interview
Read it, it talks about his vision of the future of computer-based music.

Feel like giving some tips on Atmosphere leads? =)
I've had it for about a month and haven't touched much beyond the pads and basslines.

Been playing around with it for the past 2 hours and have already come up with some incredible sounding stuff, and that was without touching the sample start time.
Thanks for the pointers!
