You want an everyday winter coat that is warm and pretty rugged to deal with everyday wear and tear I would recommend getting a Carhartt jacket. I bought mine for work last winter and it has turned into my de facto winter coat. They are also cheaper than most other winter coats.

westbeach make the best snowboard jackets, get one. pretty expensive though
here's the run down of my jackets :
levis for winter.... stained with blue paint under one of the arms couple days after I bought it
polo for rain etc .... red purple chrome and green stains from couple years of ongoing efforts
carhart fleece ..... with more paint on it ....
damn graffiti destroying my clothes I really take care of my stuff :d it's functional clothing and that's all
but it's just a jacket! No one really sees you wearing a jacket! Get something nice but don't play it all out with a jacket it's useless

I'm lookin 4 a good winter coat myself. My friends r trying to get me into snow shoeing. I've been told its a gr8 way to beat the snow, see some cool places and get some excercise.
I turn into a fat f*ck every winter, this year I'm determine to stay active. I've never gotten the proper gear in the past cause its to expensive but this year I think I'll bite the bullet.
I currently have a Woolrich coat that I love. My favorite feature is the velcro opening. You can be in and out of the coat in a flash plus its got a nice fleece lining. The only weakness its not water proof so in snow u get wet.
