This is exactly the problem we have. I as well as many others have spent nearly every penny i've ever had on music, but how much of it would the artists see ? not much I bet.

Paying for Mp3's should have been implemented from the start, I would happily buy tracks for download & keep them private especially if i knew this money was going to the artists I love so much. The problem with mp3 is that the underground community exploited it first, so it's 'bad' cos they don't make millions in profit over it. Anyway with more trance artists offering it, support your artists in some way or you're a disgrace. Why ? The ass you kiss when you listen to the track is the same one you're fleecing if you didn't purchase it

I mean really, purchasing music by the track is an easy way to go. It not only gets the tracks into the hands of the customers, but it also helps the label decide what should be pressed, and what shouldn't. It's like a voting system or sorts...

Besides, it gives all of us mp3 hounds a fair and legal way to support our habit and to support the artist at the same time. Win-win situation to me.

EDIT: It also gives us CD-DJ folks a way to have access to smaller tracks which are only pressed to vinyl anyways.

See, many sites will keep track of what you have bought so you can download them again if something happens. If they don't offer this service, then yeah, you'll have to do your own back-ups.

As for the security of the file itself: Yeah, any file on someone's home computer can be compromised given enough time and energy. However, if the company in question make the DRM fair, (look to the iTunes Music Store for a great example of this) then most people won't have a problem with it.

should be a crappy version of the track availble for stream.. then if you like, you buy it.
I say that is a great idea...but .99 per song??? Shite!! I d/l 20-30 songs per day... how 'bout say $10/month or something.

In Canada, SOCAN (like America's ASCAP) is trying something that I think is even better than all this pay-per-download crap.
They would like to charge the Internet Service Providers a small fee per user to cover monthly downloads. Everything stays anonymous at the peer to peer level and the extra fee (which will obviously just get charged back to us - the users) covers the royalties that should go to the artists. I don't know all the small details, but I think this will keep everyone happy here should it come to fruition.

Kinda like what the RIAA is doing with the blank cassette and CD-R markets..charging a fee to cover lost royalties.

PFFFT! What will they (RIAA)want to tax next??

hey if this could work for DJs and listeners alike, ie. new promo tracks and brand new releases available for download immediately for a small price, that would be amazing. yeah, mp3's not the best quality...but in all those CD-R's that get mixed, we all know its done some time or another!
