the need of midi depends on your setup.
how much h/w synths are you running atm?
if you use only software you don't need midi
1-2 synths is fine with onboard midi
from 3 you'll be better off with a midi patchbay

as said above stay away from creative
low budget but quality : the 24/96 cards of these brands
m-audio
echo
terratec

I agree with other had mention.

Im holding Delta 6/6 with the external of MIDIman 2x2. I using for my Syth and my Drum machine so i just need 2 MIDI I/O unless you had few more to add in ur midi then u can consider of Unitor 8.

6/6 give 4I/O and 2 SPDIF. i find nuthing wrong and sound great to me.

But as other had mention of beginner, Audiophile 2496 is worth of it to get. Unless you wan 1/4" jack and MIDI then consider of midiman and delta 4/4, delta 6/6 of M Audio.

Or you can choose to get Protools or Emagic. THey come with MIDI also. Not bad.

Just my 2cents

can you not get a divice that you can connect with the outbox so you can hook the 5.1 speakers to? or is it best to go with M-Audio Revolution 7.1 which should work with 5.1?

I don't know much about 5.1 and 7.1 surround systems.
Can't you find any information on the M-Audio website? I don't know for sure, but I think my Audiophile supports 5.1 surround sound.

I do have some advice for you, if you want game support and surround sound support I guess you can better buy a more suitable sound card for these functions. The M-Audio are best at producing, that's what I know for sure!

You can always decide to put two cards in your machine. One for games/DVD and another for producing music.
It is expensive, but you will have the best solution I think.

I was thinking about that, but didn't think that two sound cards would work in the same computer. I currently have a shitty Creative 5.1 sound card with my 5.1 speakers. I want a better sound card like the delta 44 so i can start to produce music, but still want to keep the 5.1 speakers with it as well as studio monitors because the 5.1 speakers are good for movies and gameing.

So if anyone can explain how 2 sound cards would work in the same computer please, thanks

I think this is achieved on a program by program basis...essentially, you have to tell each application what you want the sound to be routed through. Lets say you play the Ravensheild game, you would go into the Setup screen and select the proper card. Im sure that you set one as default for your OS in control panel or whatever, but after that...you need to individually select which card is used for each application if you want one different then the default.

nice sig there, SOUTH!
