The quality of the recording will be the same no matter what program you're using (without any post-processing of course, and at the same bitrate). That means, if you're recording at the usual 16bit,44khz,stereo, the quality of the recording is limited to your tt needles, the mixer, the cables and the soundcard itself. Not the program recording it.

Well since the thread starter wanted a program that was free (and everyone seems to suggest warez to achieve this) let me recommend the ultimate free program.

Get Audacity from sourceforge.net, it is free (as in speech) and free (as in beer).

It is a general sound editor that you can save the file as a wav, then export as MP3 (must also download LAME codec) or Ogg-Vorbis audio file.

thanks everyone for your help. One more question - What would be the difference in recording in 48000 stereo instead of 44100 stereo? anything?

Of course this is true but it is not really the main difference (IMO). I can be a good idea to record at a higher rate and do your mastering and then downsample before you burn to CD.
