i'll give you one solid simple answer that you can't argue with:
because i enjoyed it...
life's about enjoyment, i don't see why i should stop doing something i like just because everyone else says so...

(cuz you know cigarettes are crucial when drinking, after sex, and when you're extremely stressed out or just had a fight with someone...)

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

If you don't want to quit, then fine, but don't say "I quit and now I only smoke when I want to." At least admit to yourself that it's an addiction. If you still smoke, you didn't quit, period.

God, I hate it so much when people can't admit their lack of willpower and even try to pass it off as something good. No, I'm sorry, it may make you happy, but as someone who doesn't smoke but has numerous friends that do, I find it an absolutely sickening habit, it's worse than picking your nose or scratching your ass, and if someone's going to smoke in my presence then they better do it outside and blow it away from me, and it might also be nice if they used a fucking ashtray instead of littering their crushed butts everywhere without a care in the world. And as for smoking after sex? If a girl ever lights up in my bed, it'll be the last fucking time she ever lies down in it.

For cryin' out loud, when someone's trying to quit something that they're addicted to (in this case, smoking), don't encourage them NOT to! I'll post my support in favour of whoever said that cigarettes aren't exactly "crucial" to anything.

i'm not encouraging them not to smoke...
if you noticed, my first post in this thread was simply questioning their reasons for quitting because i'm curious...
and if anything, i'm encouraging them to do what they want...that's ultimately what it's about

and you may find this unbelievable, but i do have control over smoking...i DO smoke when i want...sometimes i go 2 weeks without having a cigarette...then one day i'll randomly smoke like 10, the next day, maybe 1...i smoke when i feel the need...
i really don't like the taste of cigs anymore...just occasionally it it's very relaxing...occasionally, i'm bored...occasionally, i drink all day (those would be the days i smoke like 10)...
and no, i don't light up in bed...that's ridiculous...lol...hahahahaha
me and my guy both go outside, light up, and reflect...hahaha

and yes i hate it when people smoke around me too actually...
when i smoke outside waiting for the bus i go to where i know it won't blow in their faces...
do you know why?
it's because i hate it when people do that to me...it is gross...even as a smoker, i think it's disrespectful...

you can argue with me all you want, but it won't get anywhere...
we all have habits and tendencies that others don't enjoy...

How about encouraging them to do what's best for them?

Cigarettes don't happen to be one of those silly anti-drug campaigns that the government pushes on us because they can't regulate it (in fact they DO regulate it, so it's not really out of self-interest). It's been thoroughly researched and directly linked to physical addiction and serious long-term health risks. Plus, it's disgusting. There are many good reasons to quit smoking, and I don't think it's appropriate to be telling people to continue doing it because they feel like it, especially when the person wants to quit.

And yes, I believe that you DO smoke when you want, but that hardly means you have it under control - I'd say it's leaning toward the opposite.

Maybe they LIKE smoking. Cigarettes ARE addicting and addictions can be overcome if they're in it for the right reasons.
If one of their reasons is that they're worried about their health, then by all means quit...
there are a LOT of things in this world that are worse or equivalent health-wise depending on the lifestyle..
If they're worried about the serious long-term health risks, by all means quit...
personally, i don't give a shit about the long term.
why? because any way you look at it, you're going to die a statistic.
you could die tomorrow for all you know...i'm not being pessimistic, i'm being realistic.

ok, then fine, do what's best for you if that's what you want, if you think the cigarettes have a control over you and are completely altering your life in a negative way...
however, in my mind, what's "best" for you goes hand-in-hand with what you enjoy doing.

That's an interesting philosophy, but everybody gets stuck with whatever choices they make in life. In all likelihood, we're talking statistically, forget pessimistic or realistic, if you make bad decisions or form self-destructive habits now, you're going to regret that instant gratification when you're spending the last 50 years of your life dealing with them.

None of my business though, you can do what you like with your life - I just don't particularly like to see people extolling the virtues of smoking to somebody who's trying to quit - if you think it's not our place to question your reasons for smoking, then who are you to question his reasons for quitting? Maybe he just WANTS TO QUIT.
