Mark, I'd just like to say that you have delivered time and time again no matter what club you are spinning at. There have been times when the headliner really disappointed us but you came on after and blew the roof off and sent us home with big smiles on our faces. Keep up the good work buddy!!

I wasn't able to make it to this event but from the guv website and flyers I gathered this was a Guv classics event not just trance classics. I wish you had paid more attention to details Paco.

Toronto without Mark Oliver just isnt the same.Mark you truly are a gift and inspiration for this city,me and many others have alot of respect for you and for what you have done for the scene.last night really reminded me of Meow,I just have alot of great memories from that place!!

You can't please everyone all the time...

If it wasn't for Mark and the music he plays this site would never have been created... I can't even put into words the number of good times my friends & I had at guvernment (and later at Meow) in 1998/1999/2000... We took it for granted - and you know what - looking back we always had an amazing time.

I still remember 1998 and Brooklyn Bounce - Get Ready to Bounce being played in the main room on a Saturday when it was practically empty.. Hilarious.

I'm pissed that I missed Communication - but I was happy to hear Sarah Mclachlan - Silence - I hadn't heard that at Guv since January 2000. While everyone can preach about being all about House/Progressive/Techno we all know that deep down when Trance is played people enjoy it - it's just that they're too scared to admit to it because it's somehow linked to being 'new to the scene'.

You have no idea how many house head friends of mine go to Trance parties and have a great time but are quick to forget the genre that was played - sad really - but that's what conformity does to you.

i didn't know you posted on these boards, i just started so I guess it's all new to me...

i have a question though.

I've been to the guv quite a few times over the years considering i have to take a 4 hour train or a flight to get there...

however, the only times I have been amazed at your performance was when you were opening up for international guests (many of them you outdid completely by the way). I've seen you enough to consider this less of a coincidense and more of a habit. do you notice this as well? or do you do it subconsciously? I understand this question is quite rude and you will prolly not answer or answer with some smart ass remark, but it really does interest me. just keep in mind that i have nothing but respect for your spinning and have seen you perform MUCH better than armin, ferry and the gang (I'm not certain if that sounds like a compliment though lol its meant to be). also, i'm sure the answer is quite lengthy and you might not want to type it our or post an answer on these boards, you can Private Message me as well if you wish. if you do find some spare time I would love to know what your thoughts are.

Trance being linked with people new to the scene is something I just read this week (see Benjamin Boles' NOW review of Marco V's latest CD) and it really confuses me since my friends and I were "trance dancing" back in 1988 (that's '88, not '98). In many ways, trance is a pioneering sound and a very crucial component to our scene. Without trance, many of today's sub-genres that the "in crowd' seems to favour would not exist. I just don't get it. Do Rock 'n Roll lovers not pay homage to their Rhythm & Blues roots?

I've been collecting and playing trance since the late'80s. I would hardly say that I am "new to the scene". Some of these ignorant know-it-alls should spend less time dictating what's hip to listen to and more time on the dancefloor.

I find the crowd very different on nights when a big-name guest is in town. There is usually much more excitement in the air than when I play solo. Since I feed off the energy of the crowd, it's a lot easier to help people have a great night because they are already half way there.

Also, playing shorter opening and closing sets are much different from playing marathon sets. An average 3 hour short set usually has more of an impact on people, whereas very few people pay undivided attention to a longer (say 9 hour) set.

I've never watched an Olympic marathon runner for his whole race even though he may outshine his competition and take gold, but I've watched many sprinters entire races where they end up with no medal at all.

This isn't to say that DJing is a competition to me. Everyone has their own taste and style. If I'm sharing the bill with another DJ, I try to compliment his/her style with the dancers in mind above attempting to upstage that particular DJ.

If you have an endless supply of your favourite food and eat it every day, you may not realise how much you really love it until you eat something else one day. Some food for thought?

That's a pretty bold statement to make, denouncing people's taste in music like that... anyways, I'd really like to hear more about these conformity issues you refer to...

I had a fuckin great time. There were a few tunes that I was expecting to hear (Airwave, Flaming June, etc) but oh well; hearing Protect Your Mind, Meet Her At The Love Parade and Xpander; which I totally didn't expect was great. It was an awesome night and I think it was very well varied with different genre's.

Dont worry about these people crying about tracks you didnt play.
If anyone has seen marks collection of Vinyl and imagine his archived stash, I think its pretty good that he brought the amount he did.

You pretty much summed up 7 years of guv with your set. I thought the tracks you played from 2003 were a good touch allowing us to see the evolution of trance in guv.

From time to time people are bashing MO's sets. Every week mark plays a diverse set keeping it fresh for us. Check him out at other venues and you'll hear a completely different set from what your use to at guv displaying his talents through different genres pleasing different crowds.

Put it in this prespective. What if Toronto didnt have Mark Oliver?!?!?! Makes you think eh??
(would hate to see Dr. Trance on the decks at guv every week!! LOL)



Highlights of the night.
Xpander,Protect your Mind, Someone to hold,Communication, baby elephant track etc. etc.... Every track brought back a memory.
