naw doesn't seem like it, Rank 1 and M.I.K.E come to mind, they have played live but i'm sure they were huge before playin live just from their great productions

producers usually get well known from other ppl playing their tunes

the other way around tho "Do DJs have to be good producers to get a well known name?" may have a different answer tho

it seems that practically all top DJs are great producers, i think it's because they're contributing their own sounds to the trance community and once other DJs start playin their tunes above applies

it also seems to me that they make their own productions because they are looking for a sound that doesnt exist, and therefore need to make so they can use it in a set.

But the whole thing about djs become big from producing...how do you explain that each person has a million aliases? Like if they became big, and the credit is going to another name, even though its the same guy, but most people dont know. I think its just a lot of gigs as well. People eventually hear, start in a city, work around to other cities, and then play other parts of the country, and then the world. It takes a lot of time usually. All the top DJs are at least 30.

But for exposure, it helps now that anybody can start their own internet/radio show. if anybody listens is another story

at the end of the day, people just like it and like the people who make them feel best, then the lovely lil idea of capitalism starts extracting money and there ya go, fame, fortune and usually decent tunes as well from the top djs

a lot of pop stars dont even sing at their own concerts... so i dont know what your friend is trying to prove, but i get it 100x worse than you do... especially in college. Everyone has different taste and its nieve of your friends not to understand that. Explain what this style of music really does for you and just ask them to be more open minded... its their fault if they miss out on this, not yours.
