Not the general population, but there is a decent size population of "electronica" followers.

When I was in high school, I was "talking" to this chick, and one day I was giving her a ride home from school I think, I dont know where we were coming from but I know it was on the way to her house to drop her off, but anyway I had some trance music and she was like "Carlos, What is this?(with a disgusted face)" So I go, its called trance, its some kind of music that I listen to. Then I changed the subject.

Let's go burn down every Sam Goody!!!

But seriously, I thought the same way until I went to the Virgin Megastore in NYC. You'd be VERY surprised how much electronica they have. (I saw like all the Global Underground CDs, Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, individual artist albums, etc.) In fact, I'm going there this coming Friday I think to stock up

Oh I forgot to add! Unlike the other stores, Virgin Megastore (I guess because of its size) has a WHOLE section of the bottom floor devoted to electronica, with no incorrect labelling like Sam Goody does.

TOTALY!
then they go about candy ravers & the use of drugs...

Anyways--
Ok so we don't see much electronica out there these days, it's not because of hate or dislike. Well maybe dislike, but look at what TV is advertising to the main public these days. LISTEN TO THIS - DRESS LIKE THAT - ACT LIKE HIM/HER... Whatever it is, ya know? These people are being handed their lifestyle, not to say it's wrong, but they also start to only follow that particular trend while neglecting everything else and that's when I would start to worry.
I'm pretty sure though, in a couple of years, people will start to grow out of the whole punk-rockstar or guru-rapstar and the media will turn their complete attention to electronica as a whole. And all of the sudden, ppl will like it!?

Of all the places, check out Borders.

The one in my college town (DeKalb, IL) which is in the middle of nowhere, has a big ass selection of EDM. From chicago house to prog to trance to HHC of all things. Last time i was in I saw basically the whole tiesticle collection (Magik 3 and up) to Nyana. Saw many Ferry Corsten albums, Oakenbloke and every armin album including BOTI. They had scumfrog to goldie and on. There were well over 1000 albums and CD singles. You should check it out.

Sad fact...

Borders = Barnes & Noble

They are owned by the same parent company.. therefore they compete against themselves
