They're useful for ringtones on certain types of phones, and invaluable for producing, as they contain the actual notes to tracks which can be easily exported into a sequencer. For instance, if I wanted to remix PVD - For An Angel, and I had a midi file of it (which I do), I can just insert the notes into FL (The sequencer I use), and away I go.

i wasnt comparing ogg&mp3 to midi - i was stating that ogg&mp3 are the best midis suck for listening to actual songs

No, Free Lossless Audio Codec (?; a.k.a. FLAC) is the best. It losslessly compresses audio at a nice rate and has so many other nice features. Read more about it at http://flac.sourceforge.net/ .

I'm partial to Monkeys Audio, although FLAC is open so it gets some brownie points there.

The .ape file extention is so cool.

I have some old midis from all those amiga and pc demos that were out there before the mp3 period. There are many that are really good and I really do enjoy listening to.

Midi contains NO ACTUAL SONIC INFORMATION. It is up to the midi reader to "create" sounds based on the notes or pass it onto a device that will.

That's because they aren't meant for listening to actual songs.
