Sorry, forgot to mention that it was actually meant as a deposit as a lot of people steal cartridges from decks at events. I would have gotten that back once I handed the carts back. Wasn't actually meant as a payment to play.

Ah, that makes a bit more sense.

I'm planning on buying some nice carts for home use (Shure Whitelabels or Ortofons), and I doubt I would ever bring them with me to a gig.

I was offered 200$ to spin for a party at my university, but when I arrived and began to spin I saw that not too many people were showing up (combination of poor advertising, right during exams, electronic music ). My friend, who was on the head of the committee throwing this party, went over her budget given by the university and had to pay some money out of her own pockets. I felt awful about this and told her that I'd do it for free. I still had an amazing time, and everyone who showed up loved the music. Now they want me to spin again. Would I do it for free again? Well, depends on the circumstances

Hmmm... me thinks you would

It's one thing if Armin wont do it but it's another us lowly DJs wont. I DJ for a living but I would still help a friend out providing I wasn't working that night. Being seen is always good for rep and publicity.

Cheers

I would, just aslong as it ain't full of 15 year olds wanting to hear Nelly or Eminem, I will do it for any age, as long as they are there for EDM, I would spin to a bunch of raving babies.

Cool

I've heard that in my area in Cali, DJ's make about $200 bucks a night starting out.

Big name DJ's made a huge amount of money.

I know that a couple of years ago, Oakenfold was getting $4000 for a 4 hour set.

DJ QBert makes $5000 for a half hour.

A friend I know (who owns a mobile DJ company) charges around $1500 for 2 hours. That's the full show, though. Lighting, 2-3 DJ's + MC's, speakers, etc...

All those prices apparently fluctuate quite regularly, though.

Our local celebrity DJs here in Toronto (ie. Mark Oliver) make about $700 for a private party. More if you're a bar, I suspect.

Oakenfold charges about $25,000 US for his standard 2 hour set. Most others are somewhere in the middle. The circuit boys (Rauhaufer, Calderone, Manny Lehman etc.) fall into the $10,000 - $15,000 range most of the time - but again, depends on how large an event you're producing...

PvD played a set 4 hour set last year here for $US5000

However, he was promoting his global cd, so i guess that accounts for the bargain price...

hehe
