I can try and answer your questions, and if anything is wrong, I sure somebody around here who knowswhat theyre talking about can correct it

To answer your first question, some guy at another board answered the same question, and put it this way: you'll learn by time. Over a period, your ear will train itself to recognize sounds and melodies...maybe not necessarily notes, but a feel for what track would be compaitable. Like a bike, he said...
The scale question: for the most part, like Nuclear said, most trance is written in minor keys. Maybe that's the reason why I don't like Airbases's productions: according to Nuclear, his prodcutions are written in a major key...I dunno if this is true, but I tend to dislike his prpductions and his sound...anyways, back to your questions.
I spin house as well, so I have had that question for a while as well. House doesn't have distintive melodies, but for the most part you can find the key of the song in the hook or bassline.
I guess the best way to do it is, well, just to do it...try mixing house in with some trance on a trail session and see how it sounds. house or not, if it sounds good, then thats all that matters.

Nice reading, although I would have loved if you had included some samples along the text!

Thanks for writing this guide, Christina...I know I benefitted from reading it.

tact - acute sensitivity to what is proper and appropriate in dealing with others, including the ability to speak or act without offending.

Don't down play the fact that what you posted was inappropriate and completely unconstructive and extremely disrespectful.

Great introduction to music theory and how it applies to mixing. It helped me remember a few things I forgot in music theory class.

how do i find out the key by hearing ? - do i play an instrument while playing my track or is ther another method for discovering the key.
my second question is: after finding my key, how can i differ whether the track is written in a scale which is major or minor ? - should i guess just by the feeling of the track (sad / happy).
my third and last question is: i want to use key matching not only for my trance records, and i mean by that to my house records.
this house records don't contain any melodies which you can call melodies... how can i do the explained processes on a house track.

thanks in advance...
shay.
p.s: i'm sorry for any language mistakes...

I think the first question was covered in the guide....

quote:
First off, though, how do we find what key a song is? The easiest way is to use mixmeister, which is correct 95 or so percent of the time. It is also quick and automatic. It works by detecting which notes are played and decides which scale those notes best fit into. It is important to note that mixmeister will only return minor scales when it reads the keys. If a sound sounds major as is given as minor, refer to the conjugate chart above to find the proper major key for it.

so using the program mixmeister you can find the key.

I don't think you have too much room to change the key besides pitching the song up or down.

and for mixing in house, try finding the key of the intro part that the two songs will be playing over each other. since that is when the keys will matter. then check the outro of the song.

That was a superb piece of work!
Well presented and a lot of literary skill there too (Something that I seriously lack he he).
I have to log off now but I hope you don't mind if I add some additional mixing tricks whilst using harmonics at some point tomorrow?

As for those who don't like it, fine don't read but don't try and discredit a good piece of work that someone really took the time to help 'YOU' and your DJing.

This should be made a sticky.

Good job

To the other tricks: mail me them at [email protected]

I'm still getting around to everyone's questions, I'll have them all responded to by this weekend, I promise.

Also, I will be adding a lot of samples to clarify the way all of these things sound.

i can't be bothered with this stuff. it works for some though which i think is great!

i just go by what i hear and use my experience to decide what tracks will blend well together and go with the flow of my set. but then again i have an extensive musical background so doing this just may be second nature to me. i donno

hehe.... yea. reminds me of music theory class. i never thought it would apply to mixing... but now i see that i can help. i just started mixing but i have been choosing tracks depending on the bassline, kicks. etc. never thought of using tonics, and dominants to mix. good idea!
