Being a huge prog fan - trance, house n breaks as well, i DO think there's more creativity, because there's room for more creativity, weirdness is readily accepted, even encouraged. However, sometimes it falls flat, there is crappy prog, same as there's crappy trance. Sometimes crap prog still gets hyped and becomes big, just because it's different....hmm well that makes sense to me anyway.

Yes, when prog is done right it sounds great. When trance is done right it sounds good. There is a difference i like both take a good trance tune compared to a good prog tune and you'll find all the small things that the trance tune lacks in.
