Well frankly, Im surprised no one asked...

but it makes a difference WHAT KIND of radio station you are a DJ for.
Internet radio vs. Local AM or FM Radio. Does it tend to play Dance & Trance or more mainstream stuff?

What I'm saying is...if they're saying to play more mainstream stuff it's because they know their listening audience is MAINSTREAM and not some special-taste niche that are more likely to be internet-radio listeners. They have every right to tell you what the listeners want.
And thats what DJs do. They spin what people want. If you wanna slip a few new ones in, thats cool. They just mean you're isolating your audience by distancing them from what they know and are comfortable with. ALL NEW TUNES can be very disconcerting. One or two new ones in a mix of great known songs makes for GREAT SLOTS!

that's just completely retarded.

you should do what boomer said, play an hour of old and an hour of new, but play old first since it's the first impression that counts with people (i.e. if you tell them something good and something bad about a person, it depends whether they'll be more positive towards that person if you say the good thing first or not)

or you could mix them all up, new track, old track, otherwise your radio could be like "we don't want that new stuff, we're cutting your time in half so you play only the oldies, k?"

try to keep your tracks in your record box a couple weeks longer.. that won't hurt much.

Unfortunately with commercial radio, priority has to be to please the masses. And the masses typically like hearing familar songs or songs repeated several times an hour *sigh*. Ad revenue keeping the station alive only demands and judges success by numbers. They could care less about the quality of listeners so you have to keep the masses happy. Most commercial radio listeners don't really appreciate what they are listening to and they are tuning in because media tells them it is good or because their friends like similar music. Radio Lemmings really. And sadly many are only tuning in to have something playing in the background while they work or party not because they really care about music, want to seek out a new hot track or be on the cutting edge of the genre they like. So I thank god for internet radio. However, if we had a radio station in Toronto that had a DJ that offered more than the mainstream shite I would give it another chance.

I agree you should throw in some old stuff but don't totally cave. Introducing the masses to new stuff may just educate one more listener and keep the true electronic music lover fan base growing.

I was sent a list of the tracks played within the last 24 hours and must incorporate 5 of them into every hour. I guess that isn't so bad.

I am actually looking forward to this, being offered a slot like this is a good thing for me.

Maybe some of you can tune in this coming friday and let me know how it sounds. They stress that they dont want to change my style and they enjoy it very much. But they want me to be more connected with the listeners.

So, Ill give it a go!!!

Thanks for the advice.
