I think learning to reconize when phases and phrases begin and end is good practice, but doesn't all of that come to you by knowing you records in and out & with practice? I am noob to mixing, but I have been listening to music so long that when i get records i have already heard the tune a few times and can start the record at any point and within one or two measures, have figured out where I am on the track. Shouldn't all this come naturally to true music lovers?

depends on how you listen to a track and what you put emphasis on. Inoticed since I started djin I listen to a lot more different things in music now. I will notice how long break downs are, what kind of an intro.

it just takes prectice and after a year er so it will be second nature. crap I am such a l33t dj that I only look at the vinyl and I can tell where beat 1 of a phrase is...ph33r m3.

but fo real, it will come with time, you got some excellent advice here that everyone at some point used to find out the phrase. rock on with it.

This statement gets my vote for most unhelpful, ignorant comment ever given from a DJ (i'm going on a REAL big reach here saying that you're a DJ) to another DJ. If I was moderator, I'd kick you off the forums just for saying such a thing.

Try this... if you have any knowledge at all on the subject (like DJ Flesch obviously does) then hey, put in your two cents... But if you are going to make a comment like that, I think I speak for most TA's when I say we would appreciate if you just did not post anything at all.

As for your "phase-matching" I would say if you are too lazy to start counting beats, you might as well give up. I can see it now... You drop the new track in 3 beats late because you forgot to count... Crowd goes wild... (WRONG!) Your set sounds like crap and you get booed off stage.

Phrase matching is one of the most essential parts of djing. If you don't do it right your transition will be all of out line. If you don't count the beats or at least keep track of them, how could you beatmatch?
It's taken me a while to fully understand this concept and use it to my advantage and not once since I have "mastered" phrase matching have I made such a bold comment to say that no major Dj's do such a simple thing as count beats. Maybe they don't count it, maybe its just as natural as finding the answer to 2x2. Sure its 4 but you had to count it out sometime in your life.

Now stop knockin on people who are trying to give real advice and

Sorry for wasting everyone else's time.

until i got it down pat i got into the habit of counting beats when listening to the music all the time, now i basically know when a record is going to change up.
