You just don't get it. What makes Lost in Translation such an amazing movie is its tone, the constant underlying tension between the two main characters that never quite resolves till the end. This movie has a musical/poetic narrative that is probably unparalleled in film history. It's not plot-driven or character-driven, it is tone-driven.

This film is not about ignorant Americans overseas, both of the characters are part of an elite, and I would definitely not call them ignorant. Bill Murray's character has an attitude problem, but it doesn't have anything to do with the Japanese, it's all about his mid-life celebrity crisis. Scarlet Johanssen's character is extremely smart and educated, and she's in her very early 20s with an identity crisis of her own. The way their relationship develops as a function of time in a foreign place is an ode to the global exportation of American culture in contemporary times and how this juxtaposition alters sociocultural spheres in America and abroad.

Not to mention that it is beautifully directed and acted as well.

I've been watching the Oscars ever since I can remember and I'll still do it. It's just amusing. I really hope Lost in Translation wins some awards.

I'm a huge action film fan (typical guy) and thought Return of the King and The Last Samurai were awesome movies, but Lost in Translation is far and away my pick for best movie of the year.

I don't know how to descibe why, although YaleTrance does a really good job, but it was the first movie I've ever seen where I just loved every single thing about it.

And Bass Drive, I can totally understand where you're coming from. Probably the worst thing you can do is go on and on about how much a movie is awesome to your friends and then force them to watch it. Almost everytime they'll hate it regardless of how good the movie was. So I can't blame you for not liking it.

Maybe if you watch it alone one day when people have stopped talking about it you'll get to really see it.

Oscars mean very little to me. I don't need the Academy to tell me what's the best movie or who's the best actor. I'll sneak a peek for a few laughs but nothing to get your panties in a bunch over. I can't even remember who or what won last year.

I assume that Best Picture / Best Director will go to Lord Of The Rings & Peter Jackson. For Actress / Actor definitly Charlize Theron (Monster) in her big transformation in Monster. Close behind im sure will be Naomi Watts for 21 Grams and Uma Thurman for Kill Bill. Supporting actress would be hard because they all did amazing jobs but if it were me I would vote for Scarlet Johanson for her role in Lost in Translation. The same for best supporting actor, yet again I would vote for Tim Robbins (Mystic River).

Foreign language film will go to either The Barbarian Invasions or City Of God. Animated feature definitly Finding Nemo. Adapted screenplay, definitly American Splendor. For Original screenplay definitly Lost in Translation.

My assumptions. Dont take my word for it though. Wish them all luch because most of those movie's there are great.

I think it has really good chances of winning... one of the best movies I saw this year, truley excellent with so many subtlities, brought tears to my eyes.

I was quite surprised to see that locals could do such an excellent movie.

right, but whats so amusing about it? i'm obviously missing something.. is it the show they put on? you find that entertaining? or, umm, is it the people themselves? that can't be it as the majority of them are the most conceited, arrogant and selfcentered people you'll ever meet, and to see them parading around on the red carpet, basking in the glitter of camera flashes showcasing the sizes of their egos to the rest of the world is something i just can't handle...

the actual awards are the worst really... i wish it were strictly politics, but it goes way beyond that (and you know that).. look what happened 2 years ago, they sat down and said, "hmm, you know what, we're takin' some heat for being racist, so since we havent been handing out awards to any black actors, maybe now we should dedicate one show to them, give them top 3 awards and get it over with for a while"... don't you find that mentality repulsing?

all these award ceremonies are yet another marketing ploys used to shove crap down people's throats in order to generate revenue for the money hungry hollywood! we both know that if the awards were real, then they should not be given to LOTR, cold mountain, chicago, Titanic!!, etc., and all other recycled annoying cliches, instead they should be given elsewhere where it could actually be used to expose to the general public the independent innovative film industries producing true pioneering work.. but we know thats never gonna happen..

meh, like you said, its showbiz, but the ugly side of it, and i refuse to watch and give in to the oscars hype, ie. fakeness, just like last year..

The oscar judges will be pretty damn stupid if they give LOTR ROTK an oscar for best picture when TTT didn't get one, the later was sooooomuch better as a film, and the acting was better so blah
