| quote: | Left Wing/Right Wing
Politics can be characterized as liberal (as the Democratic party in the USA), middle of the road, or conservative (as the Republican party in the USA). These are moderate parties or viewpoints on a wider spectrum that ranges from communist (or far left wing) to fascist (or far right wing). The expressions left wing and right wing come from the British Parliament in the 1700's, when the Liberal (progressive) party sat on the left and the Tory (conservative) party sat on the right.
Of course, liberal parties and people may have some conservative ideas, and vice versa. For example, racism is traditionally a conservative doctrine which relatively few conservatives (except for far right Nazis) would admit to today. The words "fascist" or "fascism" come from the symbol of the Fascist party in Italy before WWII, an ax in a bundle of sticks, which was called a fasces.

This is the best I could find. Still, nobody has given like a true understanding of left wing right wing.. liberal=left, conservative=right. this states communism is on the far left, while nazism is on the far right. but they basically have a totalerian government form. so why are they completely opposite each other?

Communism and fascism ("Nazism") are similar in structure but opposite in theory.
Communist theory is in large part based on the idea of "equality" of everything, or noncompetition - equal distribution of wealth, rationing, social programs like health care and education, noncompeting media, etc. It requires a single leader or party to make this happen, but it's not meant to be "oppressive."
A fascist dictatorship involves the dictator keeping very tight control on the society through fear, censorship, and xenophobia, and sucking up most of its resources for himself. It's like the bastard CEO of a large corporation, but on a country-sized scale.
Having said that, communist rule often turns into fascist rule quite easily. It's kind of a political "circle" more than a political "line", but if you choose to view it as a line then basically socialism (left) is leaning toward communism, and capitalism (right) is leaning toward a dictatorship. If the differences between fascism and communism are still unclear, then think of right-wing as getting closer to anarchy - less social programs, less taxes, less government involvement, let the big businesses run everything, and the fascist dictator on the extreme right basically runs the entire country like his personal corporation.

I'm assuming Heinz you are thinking in terms of American politics?
All I can say is that it’s all relative as Virus said.
Here’s my guide of the American political landscape:
Far Left/Socialistic/Green Party = The late Paul Wellstone (D), Dennis Kucinich (D), Ralph Nader (Green, Ind.), Ted Kennedy (D), Henry Waxman (D), Howard Dean (D) [is running a far-left campaign, but has governed as a centrist]
Moderate Progressive= Bill Clinton (D), Tom Daschle (D), Ross Perot (I), Jimmy Carter (D), John F. Kennedy (D ), John Edwards (D), Wes Clark (D), John Kerry (D), Lloyd Dogget (D) , Daniel Inouye (D)
Moderate Conservative/Progressive = John McCain(R ), George Bush Sr.(R ), Joe Lieberman (D ), Colin Powell (R ), Olympia Snowe (R ), John Breux (D)
Conservative= Zell Miller (D ), Bill Frist (R ), Bob Dole ( R)
Conservative Libertarian = Ron Paul (R )
Far Right /Authoritarian = Ronald Reagan ( R), Pat Robertson (R ), Bob Jones III (R ), Trent Lott (R ), Jerry Falwell (R )
Neo Conservative/Authoritarian = George W. Bush ( R),Richard Perle (R ), Paul Wolfowitz (R ), David Frum (R )
Use google, or use these links to find out more about these people I've listed:
