Re: vocals

I too am almost completely against vocals.

The only cases where I do do vocals, are w/ some spoken vocals, and w/ the sort of 'instrumental' or nonsensical vocals (which are valuable based only on their musical merits).

I'd put the female vocal in Ruhe as my all time fave, w/ a close second and third being the vocals in Cusick & Medway's "Column of Clouds" and Pole Folder's "Dust". None of these use words

Current fave w/ words = Mr. Projectile's "Wild Orchids"

I'm a huge fan of this tune too.
Standout track on one of Emerson's GUs (can't remember which)

Rumor has it that Slam's new album contains another stormer like that

it was on gu020 - singapore

but everyone fails to mention and notice one of the nastier tech house songs in recent memories which is found on gu015 cd 2

Pascal F.E.O.S - I can feel that

Has this cool vocal around what I can only describe as one of the nastiest and overlooked grooves in recent memory (from 1996 btw)

Hmmm...hard question.

Vocals can definately make or break a song, and quickly...

I think it really depends on the song that's being sung with for me.
Sometimes I envision putting samples of vocals in songs that have no vocals; other times I wish for the dub version...

So I guess, in short, I can't say until I hear the song...

i basically only like vocals where they are used as another musical element or you can't understand what they are saying.

examples:

tone depth - rumblefish
james holden - nothing (nothing returning mix - i hate the one where you can understand what she's singing)
science department - breathe (danny howells drifting dub)

however, there are rare occurences when i like them.

example:

U & K - On and On
Sander Kleinenberg - Soul Shelter
RC Groove & Joshua Collins present Shay Coco Butta - Deep In My Soul

i even like the light's remix of "slave for you".

vocals i can't stand: stuff like "as the rush comes". so many tracks that could be good have been absolutely ruined by cheesy lyrics. it's a fine line

i like vocals, pretty much all of them.

The only ones I can't really stand are the ones that are super super super cheese, I can't even think of an example but pretty much if a track makes me burst out laughing when the vocals kick in, that's shit.

I personally don't like vocals for the most part.

I prefer vocals that are non-sensical-- the voice as an instrument rather than a conveyer of meaning (via lyrics).I fidn a lot of vocals cheesy (for example i don't like 'beautiful things' or 'as teh rush comes')

I do like vocals but I will agree with those in this thread that say that relying too heavily on vocals just makes things too cheesy for them. I do love the use of the voice as an instrument but I rarely find that this is done, well, if at all, in today's new TRANCE tunes. Don't get me wrong I am not slamming Trance because Armin continues to prove that there is still some great new shit being made. There are always exemptions!

Actually a big reason why I moved towards listening to more Progressive stuff is that TRANCE started to rely too heavily on vocals and non distincitive/chilling vocals at that. Some I dare say even bordered on dance 108 radio friendly cheese. I found that Progressive used vocals in moderation and it tried to use the voice as an additional musical layer rather than just as a way of dropping lyrics.

However, the recent new wave of retro (retro = depeche mode) progressive remixes goes against all that...and I will say...ME NO LIKE! I may be the only person in the world who never liked depeche mode...call me freakgirl!

One of my fave tracks that uses a vocal but has no real lyrics...is Ilay & Beat C - I Saw (Yahel remix)

mumbo jumbo lyrics are indeed the best!

Vocals are essential, um
sorta like Room 5 and BT's Dreams /or Running Around Town.

And not to mention, male vocals arn't bad either.
