In a community such as trancEaddict, which contains members who have followed and loved trance for years, it is only natural that people will resent popular, commercial tracks that sound less original than most trance that we love.
Most commercial tracks are formulaic, contain unoriginal "cheesy" synths, contain vocals with little meaning and basically sound a lot more like pop than trance. I think this is what most people mean when they call DJ Sammy, Lasgo, Ian Van Dahl etc "cheese".
The general sound of club dance music that purports to be trance is noticeably different to our trained ears, and it obviously does not appeal to most of us. However, you have to look at who the music is aimed at.
Commercial dance music is aimed at teenagers and other young people who aren't into harder, more intense dance music. It has a happy, vocal-filled sound because that is more appealing to people who enjoy pop music, and people who are less focused on one particular type of music (dance).
Many producers of commercial dance have been hugely successful, and they have probably earned millions of dollars from their music. (e.g. DJ Sammy, Ian Van Dahl, Scooter ) I would prefer this money to go towards quality trance producers so they can keep on making great choons, but sadly, this is not so.
I think that many people on TA make the mistake of comparing or equating commercial success with "cheese".
| quote: | cheese = tunes made for the commercial market (imo)
overplayed tunes are not cheese imo they´re just overplayed |
Word.
A great track can be overplayed until the point where you get sick of it, but that doesn't stop it from being a great track. I believe that great trance tracks that achieve commercial success should be applauded. It is a worthy reward for trance producers who have worked very hard (probably with little recognition). A trance tune that achieves commercial success is still trance.
On the other hand, a commercial dance track that calls itself trance and achieves success is cheese, not trance. The track was always cheese. Sure, we probably hate it, and it is bloody annoying when artists call it trance when it definitely is not, but hey, just ignore it. There's not much we can do about it.
Finally,
I think that people calling Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes cheese are being quite ignorant and many are merely jumping on the bandwagon so they can look 1337 amongst the other TAs. It is a killer track. No doubt we have all heard it till the cows come home, but we should show some respect around here, instead of dissing one of our own.
Save the hate for the real cheese out there.
