people who say that students only go to get pissed as monkeys is a fool.

Its only the students who go to uni's such as Bumfuck Nowhere Polytechnic that do that

in all seriousness though. Anyone who goes to a high profile uni such as the ones in the Russell Group, went to that one for one thing. Because its famed for its success. And if you go there, you will try and succeed. Very few people in my course and related ones on my campus - Biomedical sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy etc etc etc, go and spend huge amounts of money to get drunk. They are there to secure a future.

The Russell Group is like our version of The USA's Ivy League, and most decetn uni's are in there, theres 20 in there, and it includes (off the top of my head)

Cambridge, Oxford (Oxbridge), Kings College (my uni), UCL, Imperial, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, LSE i think.

Still, on top up fees – Yes Uni’s need more money but it shouldn’t mean the students have to pay for it – it should come from the government coffers. By the time we are our parents age, if this trend continues, the educations system will be 100% privatised. Not a good thing at all.

yeh, its kinda where people like you and harriet would lose out, because those uni's would easily charge the 3000 maximum and still get full, and blatently if you get into them unis you are hard working/have to work hard to suceed anyway.

the problem is the not so good unis have to lower the level of their courses to cope with the lower level less hardworking people going to them who cant go to the other ones, which is a bit annoying for me because im getting like 100% very assignment/exam and there is getting too much temptation to do nothing. Atlhough its my own fault really due to a level but then again there are only 3 uni's in the country that do my course and hallam is the most highly rated.

Yeah, that original view is about 5-10yrs out of date now, since all the poly's went uni, it comes around on the fact there aint no jobs worth doing outy there anyhow, the traditional apprenticeship became redundant and school leavers had a huge skills gap or had to settle for consumer/services sector jobs.

Most uni's are now in a really difficult situation as they've had their grants cut so they have to take students on juat to survive. Tied in with the whole demand for computerised learning and a demand for more specialist courses that lead to a paticular vocation, most uni's are now trying to juggle themselves away from bankruptcy.

The ones here in london lean heavily towards foreign students as pretty much the only source of income they can rely on.

Amen to that.

I go to Teesside, which isn't in the nicest place in the world (Middlesbrough), but I chose that Uni because of the facilities it had to offer me. The computing facilitis rival that of Oxbridge, UCL, St Andrews etc so that's why I went. The piss-ups are just an added bonus.

And what about the students who genuinely do want to go but can't afford to? Entry into university should be based on academic ability alone, not the size of your father's wallet (as will happen in about 90% of cases following this).

Used to mate!! Really enjoyed it too, so still keep an interest as it were.

The fact that students will have an increased debt isn’t my main problem with this though. It’s the fact that it will lead to a situation where the best Unis charge a bomb (so only the rich kids get in, leaving the crap to the rest of us) and the poorer Unis having to charge less. The best Unis continuing to get richer and richer at the expense of the poor ones. All these bursaries etc will only go so far. And don’t anyone say blah blah blah it’s only capped at £3000 – That figure will sky rocket once the 5 year or however long it’s capped for ends.

This is another fatal step towards a totally privatised education system.
