one thing i hate about modern trance
megadramatic super duper breakdowns.
layered over by a generic snazzy synth, whereas the volume increases slightly.
how is someone gonna dance to that and ENJOY it?

ps. boomer, i lub ur avatar

Trance was definitely a lot more varied in 1999. As people have said, it wasn't the same formulaic crap which is coming out now. Case in point, Ronski Speed. Every song is the same. You can recognize the bassline from a mile away, and you can recognize the synths because they are the same in every song with some rearranging. The new Sun Decade is like the first Sun Decade (which I liked) except they tried to do a similar thing with the vocals, and they sound like shit. Why do the SAME SONG?

Oakenfold's 1999 EMs were some of the most intense, emotional trance "journeys" I've ever experienced. You can't get that nowadays. There are no no-name artists sending in surprisingly good tracks which bring new things to the table. People get excited about new tracks from the same old artists, and the new tracks aren't really new in a sense.... this is why trance is starting to bore me.

What about psy-trance, has that changed much? I've only recently started listening to it.

BTW, check out:

Azior - Sunset at Myvatn

for a new tune in the "old style"

my view on this topic is that I think '99 trance was more minimal and more melody driven than late present trance. todays trance have a lot of dull sounds (progressive stuff) and a lot of complex layers that in peaks may only come off as weird ear-confussive noises. 99 trance was simply more melodic, linear, clean, and fresh. todays trance is dull and opaque. its not beacause its meant to be like that, but beacause average common and popular trance producers are producing todays trance that way.

I was thinking the same as i was listening to Ferry Corsten @ Trance Energy 2000 today. The ISOS, ITWT, and those old sets from 99/2000 are my favorites. Trance today is not as good as it used to imo, we are missing that true euphoric and uplifting factor.

Quality has improved, cause the producing equipment has improved.
I hear people telling that most DJs play the same record... That has always been in that way, but through unlimited broadcasts and livesets these days, they notice it now...
I think that the internet made it very hard for DJs te become original, cause everything is on the net. Only the big names can play new tracks on cdr (i mean GOOD quality new tracks.) Even promo's are on the net before the official release. I am not saying that this is wrong, but people should realize that they created this situation. They download everything, miss nothing and complain about sets with the same and no new tracks.

If i listen to tracks from 1998 or something, the quality of the sound is not as good as the quality of the sound of now. Its getting better and better IMO. The tracks from those good old days are still good, but I am talking about the quality of sound...

sorry, trance has just gotten worse over the years.
theres a couple of producers still putting out quality trance, but for the whole..
99 was brilliant, 00 was great, 01 was good, 02 was average, 03 was saddening..
melodys keep getting more cheesy, vocals are just beyond a joke, just doesnt compare :/

melodic progressive is the saviour.
