I beleive the "Integrated 3d graphics" means hes getting an NForce mobo of some kind, meaning it has a geforce 2 onboard, which isn't too spectacular (but acceptable as a backup).

I very very very strongly reccomend the Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo. Its fan-fucking-tastic.

Make sure you get DDR Ram, not SD-Ram which is circa 2000 and sucks balls. If you want some serious speed I reccomend Corsair XMS ram.

If you don't get an Nforce mobo that has its own onboard network, for the love of god get a name brand network card. Nothing will hose your computer faster than a cheap network card, which causes 95% of all IRQ bluescreens. I reccomend Linksys or IBM. Of course, if you get the a7n8x deluxe mobo like I reccomend, you'll have onboard network anyways.

Also I don't reccomend an LCD monitor if you want to do any decent gaming. Unless your going to pay $1000 or more for one, they simply cannot come close to the refresh rates and resolutions that a $150 CRT can do.

Never do that with computers. Unless you have LOADS of cash and know EXACTLY what you're doing (example: a P4EE is the "best" according to Intel, but in reality, it is not - you'd end up blowing a lot of money when you could spend less on an A64).

in terms of geting the best, i would get a "mid range" cpu, some quality ram, quality motherboard and quality video card:

typical system id go for is a :

pentium 4 2.4C or amd athlon xp2500+ barton core, a matched pair of high performance ram for dual chanal, such as corsair (what i use), ocz, etc and a radian 9800 pro.

both those cpu's are good overclockers if you wish to try overclocking, even if you deciede not to, they are more than good enough to run all the programs a home user would need to run

harddrive choice, dvd, cd etc are pretty much up to what your indivdiual needs are

Whenever I get a new comp/upgrade I tend to try and build last year's high end system. It's a lot cheaper and still very fast.

Thats not what i said, I said the Best not the most expensive, for instance i know that AMD makes better chip sets than Intel does, and ATi is better than Nvidia[at least in my opinion], and he does have LOADs of cash, 1500 for a system period is alot, and home built, well thats as much as you can proabbly do with[including case mods and best case and all that]

cheers

Yea but in 90%+ of cases, the best is the most expensive.

i mean i dont wanna spend that much on a comp but i would because it would last a while. but if i could get away with spending less that would be wicked. also i add all the programs i wanted sound forge 7.0, acid pro4.0, friuty loops etc. but i found a way to get them for free so my limit is more like 600-800
