the diameter of the earth at the equator is some 8600 miles. The CIRCUMFERENCE of the earth is 20k+ miles at the equator. all they say is it's 2600 miles "across", assuming equatoral diameter (the thing has to be perfectly, or near perfectly spherical due to the immense gravities involved in a star collapsing), so more or less it's approximately 1/4th the diameter of the earth. oops, you're right. I was thinking of the fact that it takes you 20000 miles to drive (if possible ) from the North to South Pole
