A track is a ripoff if it doesn't give any credit to the original artist and lets ppl think it's their own production. On Heart Of Asia singles they do mention Ryuichi Sakamoto as the writer of the track.

So Heart Of Asia really isn't a ripoff but it's more like a remake of the old track even if it doesn't have the same title (except on the 10 year release on Positiva has Heart Of Asia titled as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence).

Considering that Sakamoto did compose a different song called "Heart of Asia" - maybe they had to change it for legal reasons?

If one says Kayashi - Furio is a rip off of Watergate - Heart of Asia, then both of those tracks are a rip off of Ryuichi Sakamoto - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

Another interesting note is that, in the good old days, Paul Oakenfold use to play the original 1983 instrumental [movie version] in his sets!
