the long version.

1) Why have you left your country?
originally, i left my country because of my dad's job. i was 11 and we moved from mexico to brazil, and then to shanghai, china when i was hitting puberty. it could be said that i matured in shanghai, and i'm therefore attached to the place.
im in canada at the moment, but not for much longer at all. in fact, im only here to continue the education i left when trying to settle and become self-sufficient in china about a year ago. i think im willing to give it another shot.

2) Do you think of ever going back to your homeland?
i dont think so. not at all.
ive tried, and [see 3)]

3) What troubles did you have when you arrived? Culture shock, difficulties with the language...
arrived where?
in brazil, it was the language at first. you know that spanish is similar to portuguese, and it took me a bit less than a year to be fluent in it [fluency is gone now; i understand the language completely but a few specific words have completely vanished to my subconscious. get me drunk and they'll surface].
in shanghai, it was the culture at first, and language played a part in that. again, it took me about a year to adapt completely to both the local and international communities in the city. combine that with the maturing i was going through, and i'm left stranded in the culture.
it's ironic that my own culture gave me the strongest shock out of all the foreigns once i had never before experienced. i moved back to mexico in 2002, not voluntarily, of course. i lasted one semester, and, as mentioned, gave everything up to get back to shanghai. SARS struck and i was sent back to mexico soon after. i ended up here, in toronto, because it was supposedly a cosmopolitan city and the no.1 place to live in the world, according to the UN. it's cosmopolitan, but not enough; not like shanghai. it's no longer the no.1 place to live and i don't think it ever was or will be for me.
this ends with me going back to mexico next week, because of the lack of familiarity in this city for much too long and family matters. i won't last there; i know it. shanghai is probably my next real destination, with mexico being a stop-over.

ultimately, i would blame everything on my personality. it's getting to the point where that radiohead song applies to basically everywhere i try to settle; shanghai included. but at least it's more familiar than anywhere else.

im probably gonna end up in shanghai and franchised around asia.

I totally relate to this sense of constant blurr and looseness. I'd be willing myself to go anywhere but I can't make up my mind on anything.

I keep telling myself I'm lost and my life is going to crap cause of all this confusion in my life but lately I've tried to tell myself I have to see the bigger picture. "everything" will work out for us through time. That's all we can tell ourselves.

Hope things come out for the best for you.

And in regards to Toronto well it's impossible for it to be as lively as Shanghai...Nowhere in the "world" is more lively then big cities in asia.....

Wow, that's quite a story, emono

By the way, what's Shanghai like? What's their view towards Latin America?

And what language do you speak better then, Chinese or Spanish?

1) Why have you left your country?

My dad decided to move to Canada after death of my maternal mom because he thought it would be a better place to raise me and my sister. Too bad I'm such a disappointment to him.

2) Do you think of ever going back to your homeland?

I'm Canadian first, but I recognize my heritage and do want to go back to Korea hopefully soon.

When I came to Canada about 12 years ago or something like that, there were very few Koreans living in Toronto, unlike today where the fob Koreans swarm Toronto. (And I got mistaken for Chinese which doesn't quite happen anymore) So it was hard for me to learn the language and adapt to the Canadian culture at first. But now, I'm more Canadian than Korean cultural wise.

From England live in Canada now.
1)parents were moving here cos they got offered a job.
2)I think about going back every now and then, I will do, but dunno if it will be to live.
3)It was a fair bit of a shock, I was used to the nightlife in England and when I came here, well, it was like dead (no offence to anyone but it is in allot of ways, well Calgary anyway, although its getting better), and the amount of snow was a shock, but I love it now cos I love to Snowboard, I love Canada for giving me that, umm, didn't realize how hot it can get in the summer, but thats cool, and ummm, oh yea, can't believe the drivers here, accident are everywhere, its unreal.
