is it worth it to get the pioneer effects rather than get a new mixer with effects??

that really depends on what mixer you plan on getting, and what you plan on doing with the effects unit. unless it has send/recieve jacks on the back you can only have the effect over the master signal, and even with them sometimes it doesnt sound as good. with the djm mixers you can have it on either a single channel or the master, but an effects unit on its own is more controllable than one built into a mixer. my ideal fun setup would be a djm3000 AND an efx500

I don't really use effects units even if they are available to me. I have a Korg Chaos pad and don't really use that either.
My main complaint is that the sound quality reduction is too noticable when being processed through most (probably all) of the affordable units.

Send and recieve is a must in my opinion otherwise the effect dominates the signal and sounds so obvoiusly 'additional' that it will be screaming at you rather than making the listener think which mix is this?

The only effects I bother with are usually band filters (High and Low). A well placed delay can sound really nice but the thing is that the music so obviously looses something when it's taken away.

The Chaos pad does have some nice features that you can do while a vocal is running just before the breakdown kicks off but the other thing about effects is that less is more. Use it sparingly or your crowd (Even if it's your cat) will get bored and possibly even annoyed after a while.

They can be fun but they are gimmicky in my mind unless you shell out the big bucks to get propper stuff.

Just my 2 UK pound sterlings worth.
Nem

I just got the djm500. One effect i found pretty cool is if you use the echo betweetn 2 and about 20 milliseconds. its so small that you can't hear anything repeated but it makes a wierd hi pitched sound and if you change it from 2 to 4 to 6 and so on the tone changes. Has anyone else played around with this? is it to cheesy?

you have discovered picotto's little trick

if you use it well, good things will come, but it sounds wank if you do it wank. you have to be creative with it to make sure you arn't doing something that hasn't already been done a million times. i dont think you can do this on djm500, but it sounds wicked if you isolate it to only mids and highs, leaving the kick clean

the same goes with the use of a flanger... people who just let a flanger loose and let it do a couple of cycles then turn it off.. damnit use your brain

what is the setting you use on the parameter at the time of the echo, does it equal what is in the top box??? and if so, when do u drop it ?? and what do u mean by "between 2 and about 20 milliseconds"????
