they put him in prison, then liberated him... then later tried to kill him on several occasions... which finally worked out when the man came out of the mosque on a wheelchair after doing his prayers.

By taking out Yassin, Israel hopes to throw a cog in the murderous wheel that is Hamas. Yassin has been personally responsible for sending tens of suicide bombers into Israel. Perhaps the loss of such a figurehead will deal a significant blow to the long term health of the organization.

I stated above that Arafat should be next. Well, I will settle for this chick, then Arafat.

It's about strength. Unrelenting resolve. It is the only thing mutually respected by the parties involved. Besides he was imprisoned by the Isrealis only to be released as part of somekind of plea-bargain if I remember correctly? Anyone?

Ya, Yassin was released in exchange for mending good relations with Jordan, after an attempt to kill another Hamas leader failed there. Mossad agents were caught soon after the attempt in 98. I believe Yassin was exchanged for the agents.

If the circumstances don't include firing a missile into a crowded street and hoping one of the casualties may be a known terrorist. Then yes. And this applies to all terrorists in the area, including the most infamous, Sharon =/

I think Sharon would have been a great target...I second your post Tahti

I think assasinating a leader like this has more of an effect than imprisoning him. No doubt will this bring more death to Israel...

Im scared what the near future holds.

Pretty stupid move by Israel (from Israel's point of view), if you ask me.

Sheik Ahmed Yassin was a spiritual leader. He was in the past certantly responsible for lots of suicide bombings, but right now, he was just that: a spiritual leader. For sure he did not orchestrate bombings ATM, and i doubt he knew about the majority of them.

Killing him is a very stupid move. The guy was a rich man, and all his money will now join the funds of Hamas (that was the case for most of it, but now all the money belongs to Hamas). And by killing him, the organization will not weaken, only get stronger. The Hamas would only get weaker if Israel kills the man (or men) who are the true brains of the Hamas. Killing a spiritual leader will only enfuriate the militants and bring more chaos upon Israel, and consequently, upon Palestine.

Or do you people think an 80-year old man, in a wheelchair and on the border of senility was the "man of the plan"?

I have no doubts this will bring a lot of suicide bombings in response. That's another reason why it was a stupid move - suicide attacks will happen, and they will be worse, because now there are many palestinians wanting to avenge the old man. It's funny what an Israeli minister said in BBC today - "now the peace process can go forward" . Yeah, right.

You beat me to the punch, this thing just hit the wires just a couple of minutes ago.

To all Palestinian supports, let me pose this question:

If there were to be no reaction to the killing of Yassin, would you support killing him under those circumstances?

Yoepus, if killing him would generate no response from the palestinians, why do it? I would like to see him dead as much as i would like Sharon!

Oh, no. Israel's really done it now. Hamas vows revenge. They may stoop to even worse terror attacks, such as outfitting a 10-year-old with a bomb, blowing up buses, disco's, pizzeria, Passover Seders, hitting public places where young people hang out. I bet they might even now try to target innocent women and children.
When Yassin was killed, he was in a car. Now he knows how all the Jews he ordered massacred on buses feels.

The PR shots of him in his wheelchair will be remembered by those that don't see the crippled bodies of all those that he ordered to be bombed by Hamas.

A very foolish move, Sheikh Yassin is now far more powerful in death than he ever was in life. He is now what every muslim admires the most "a martyr."
