No, the vast majority of speakers do not have an amp built in to them. Some do, and these are called Powered Speakers or Powered Monitors. TranzAddict, yours are *not* powered speakers, because they plug into your stereo. Your stereo does, however, have an amp built into it.
If you connected your mixer directly to the speakers, without going through the stereo, you would barely hear anything. Not to mention the fact that you would have to try shoving bare ends of cables into RCA sockets where they are not meant to go. The signal from the mixer needs amplification before it gets to the speakers, and the amplifier in the stereo does this.
The signal that comes from your turntables is slightly different... this is at a much much lower level, and has very little bass etc. This needs extra amplification, but this is done inside the mixer. If you didn't have a mixer, and wanted to connect the TT to a stereo directly, you would have to have a Phono input on your stereo. But this is irrelevant, because you have a mixer, and this does the ectra amplification bit.
The cable you have with the red, white and yellow is absolutely fine. The yellow one is exactly the same as the other two, and is usually used for video signals, e.g. connecting a video camera to a TV. You can definitely use this cable.
