It's a sound produced by idiots who think they are enhancing the musical experience of others by making it. If course if they were doing it in time to the music it might help.

It can get annoying, but not more so than someone going “PEEP peep PEEP, PEEP peep PEEP, PE-Pe PE-Peep P-P P-PEEP” on a whistle over and over…and over and over all set long right next to your ear.

Side note: we used to do it at school when the teacher left the room. Once the teacher had gone for ages and we’d worked up to quite a volume, when all of a sudden the head teacher walked in...eek!
