Although the effects oh hypnosis can be dramatic , there are limits to the behaviors that can be influenced by hypnosis. First , contrary to popular belief , you cannot be hypnotized against your will. Second , Hypnosis cannot make you stronger than your physical capabilities or bestow talents that you do not already have.
However , hypnosys can enhance physical skills or athletic ability by increasing motivation and concentration or by reducing anxiety.
Third , hypnosis cannot make you perfeorm behaviours that are contrary to your morals and values. Thus , you're very unlikely to commit criminal or immoral actions under the influence of hypnosis - unless , of course , you find such actions acceptable.
Also , a psychologist ERNEST HILGARD , believed that when a person is hypnotized his consciousness experiences dissociation , which splits it into two or more simultaneous streams of mental activity.
Therefore , while one side of the consciousness responds to the practitioner , the other acts as guardian , also called "hidden observer" .
