No sweat. Ordinarily you could blast away and I would never know. Swamper's link to our site is actually what got me to check tranceaddict out (Thanks Swamper! Amazing site btw). Honestly, there isn't much you can say that hasn't already been said by someone out there so it doesn't ruffle my feathers. If we get an A on concept, music, animation and effort, I can take a ding or two in another areas. But, I think if you actually watch the movie, you will be REALLY surprised by the acting. There are a couple of my friends that could use an acting class or two, but the principles did a fantastic job.

Some of the shots in the trailer aren't the best shots and I can think of three that probably won't be making it in the final cut. I am really proud of how the rough cut is shaping up though and think the finished product is going to be worth everyone's time. I would be interested in hearing specifics about what you didn't like though. That type of feedback is really helpful as we get it edited. Also, I posted in the production studio about needing a couple songs for the ST, so if anyone has anything has anything that they think would work, please drop me a private message.

I can't really give you a lot of specific comments by only seeing a trailer and if you're already at the rough cut stage you can't be expected to make major revisions that would in tale changes to plot or require reshooting. Here are some general comments.

1. The trailer needs a voice over to give a synopsis of the movie. I would focus on the main characters, who they are and how they relate to the story. Right now just seems like a bunch of scenes thrown together without a purpose.

2. The synopsis listed on the site is a good start but it's too vague. I'm also a big fan of conflict ie (good vs. bad, villian vs. hero). You ever seen the movie Adaptation, the scene where Robert McKee tells him at the lecture you have to tell a story? Never lose sight of the story and the characters that inhabit it.

1. I agree. We are slated to have three trailers done at about the same time as the final cut. The second of those will have a VO.

2. I have it on my to do list to revisit the synopisis and a few other bits of copy. Right now, it is just a little more than a run on logline.

Swamper Status Report May 4th, 2004

I am pleased to report that Travis and Jordan Kotzebue have recently joined the Swamper team to provide a couple of animated segments for the finished feature. The team is really excited because these guys are VERY talented. They have started to put together some fantastic sketches and storyboards. This is going to be a real treat!

Dan and I have almost finished the rough cut. There will be a test screening at the Rendezvous¡¦ in a couple weeks. It will be the first time anyone has watched the entire rough cut beginning to end. We have been watching the same footage so much that some fresh eyes will be very welcome. It should prove to be an interesting experience and will certainly provide some good feedback on which parts are working and which are not.

Tiff continues to update the website and the most recent enhancements are looking really cool. She has added some audio (some needs a bit of tweaking) to the bios and has put some video of interviews that I did for a couple of radio stations back in January. She has some really neat surprises planned for the site this month and we hope to get some cast interviews up on soon.

We have been in contact with several musicians and record labels about the soundtrack. There is some really exciting stuff happening here and I hope by the next status report, I can announce some of the performers. We are shooting ADR and are still on schedule for a July premier. I just got done talking to Sage at The Alibi Room about the premier party. He puts together some incredible parties and this one will be a guaranteed good time.

The team is also doing a lot of research on independent film marketing and festival submission guidelines. There is a lot to learn, but fortunately a lot of people have blazed this trail before us and have been kind enough to document their efforts. The first set of Swamper stickers will be ready to pick up from the printer this afternoon. There are six styles designed by Tiff (artwork by Travis). These are the "Official Collector Stickers". Be sure to pick up the whole set . A Full color back-cover ad will grace the next issue of Bandoppler magazine. The new 'Swamper' Status Report 6/17/04...

Mark your calendars because the Swamper Premier date is now set for Saturday, August 7th. Go ahead and get a baby sitter, because this date will not change without a fight to the death. The event will be held at the Seattle Art Museum which holds about 300 people. We expect the tickets to go on sale this Friday and they should sell out pretty fast, so if you have any interest in going please make sure to send an email to [email protected] to get on the mailing list and be the first kid on your block to get the details. Your ticket will also get you into the Premier Party at The Alibi Room (immediately following the screening).

We had an intimate rough cut test screening May 12th at the Rendezvous. It was an incredible experience to get so much instant feedback. It has really been helpful as we are cutting the film down from 2 hours 6 minutes.

Last month, we hit our biggest snag yet. Dan and I had spent a few hours putting together a rough cut of the number one song on our wish list and sent it off to the label convinced that we were geniuses. We talked with the Quannum guys for awhile and they were really cool to us, but in the end they decided that they didn’t want to license the track. It was a pretty sad day, until I saw Gift of Gab and Chief Excel doing a National Yahoo (or maybe it was Google) commercial on TV later that night. I quickly realized that these guys had become bigger than I thought. Either they wanted a lot more than we could offer, or they were trying to gently push us in the right direction. We decided to start talking to some local labels and have gotten an incredibly positive response. A couple of the labels have even opened up their libraries to us. We are still hammering out the details, but the music is now looking incredible. I can’t wait to make the artist announcements. In an interesting twist of fate, a very mysterious package full of CD’s from a prominent person at a MAJOR record label arrived yesterday with a card that said only, “With Compliments”. It should also be noted that I met a couple guys off this very site and it is quite likely that work they posted here will find its way onto the soundtrack.

Quite a bit of the ‘Swamper’ cast and crew were able to make it down to the Finger Fest in Richland, WA this past weekend. In case you are wondering, Finger Fest is not something dirty. It is an alternative arts festival put on by a DJ named Franky Four Fingers. If you have been to the interview section of the website, he is the guy with Sideshow Bob’s haircut. He also plays the managing editor of The Stranger in ‘Swamper’. We enjoyed some sunshine, beers, live music, sold a few T-shirts, and were treated to the Karaoke stylings of Cam Buckenberger.

Our animation team took a bit of a hit, but Jordan has really stepped up and is now doing the work of two people. The animation he is putting together is looking INCREDIBLE!

Last week, there was a bit of a blow out with my apartment manager regarding the ‘Swamper’ stickers that have been making their way around town. I have already gone into this in detail, and don’t feel like rehashing it too much. Let’s just say the police were involved for several hours, my apartment manager is in SERIOUS need of a hobby, and Seattle may be one of the best cities in the US when it comes to observation of the first amendment. Some GREAT press kit ideas are also a result of the experience.

Our back page ad in Bandoppler magazine came out yesterday as well. It looks fantastic and the magazine is the definition of 'cool'. Please head to your local Barnes and Noble to check it out.

After a year and a half, we are finally starting to get the finishing touches on Swamper. This last 5% is indeed challenging to complete, but we are so close it is scary. We appreciate all of the help, patience and love we have received from everyone and look forward to showing this monster to you really soon.
